LOS ANGELES ? Current season shows on The CW including "The Vampire Diaries" and "Gossip Girl" are coming to Hulu.

The five-year deal announced Friday means that before the end of the year, the online video service will feature shows from five of the largest six broadcasters ? ABC, NBC, Fox, The CW, and Univision. The only holdout left is CBS.

Under the new deal, subscribers who pay $8 a month for Hulu Plus will get the five most recent episodes from The CW's lineup the day after they are broadcast on television. The same episodes will then be available for free on CWTV.com three days after broadcast. Eight days after broadcast, the episodes will be available on the free version of Hulu for computers.

All the versions will come with ads.

Earlier this month, The CW also agreed to make all its previous seasons' shows available to subscribers of Netflix Inc.'s streaming plan, which also costs $8 a month.

The CW, co-owned by CBS Corp. and Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros., is a network that targets young women aged 18-34, many of whom catch the shows online.

WASHINGTON ? Mitt Romney may need a censor. For himself.

In the last few weeks in Nevada, the man who owns several homes told the state hit tough by the housing crisis: "Don't try and stop the foreclosure process. Let it run its course and hit the bottom."

At one point in Iowa, earlier this year, the former venture capitalist uttered, "Corporations are people," with the country in the midst of a debate over Wall Street vs. Main Street. At an event in economically suffering Florida, the retiree ? who is a multimillionaire many times over ? said, "I'm also unemployed."

Over the past year, the Republican presidential candidate has amassed a collection of off-the-cuff comments that expose his vulnerabilities and, taken together, could reinforce a perception that he's an out-of-touch elitist who lacks a core set of beliefs.

So far, the foot-in-mouth remarks haven't seemed to affect his standing in the nomination race.

Romney has run a far more cautious and disciplined campaign than his losing bid of four years ago. He's kept the focus on his core message: He's the strongest candidate able to beat President Barack Obama on the biggest issue of the campaign, the economy. He still enjoys leading positions in public opinion polls in early primary states and across the nation. Few, if any, of the other Republicans in the race have turned his remarks against him.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Romney's chief rival with the money to prove it, is all but certain to try. Perry has already started suggesting that Romney lives a life of privilege while he comes from humble roots. And Romney's eyebrow-raising comments are tailor-made for critical TV ads.

Look no further than the Democratic Party and Obama's advisers for proof of that.

Each time Romney says something that makes even his closest aides grimace, Democrats quickly put together a Web video highlighting the remark ? a preview of certain lines of attack come the general election should the former Massachusetts governor win the nomination.

"Mitt Romney's message to Arizona? You're on your own," says a new ad by the Democratic National Committee that jumps on Romney's foreclosure remarks.

Romney's team publicly dismisses their boss's occasional loose lips, dismissing them as inconsequential to voters focused on an unemployment rate hovering around 9 percent.

"It's a long campaign and at the end of the day people are going to judge Gov. Romney and his ability to take on President Obama over jobs and the economy. And certainly there will be a lot of back and forth as the campaign progresses," said Russ Schriefer, a Romney strategist.

"This election will be decided on big issues because the issues are so big and so important," Schriefer said. "And not on a gaffe or a mistake or a moment, any particularly moment. It's more about the big moments and who voters see and being able to turn the economy around."

It usually takes more than one gaffe or one mistake to undo a campaign. And other candidates have made their own potentially problematic comments.

Take, for instance, Herman Cain's assertion that the Wall Street protesters are in the streets to distract from Obama's record: "If you don't have a job and you're not rich, blame yourself." Or Perry's suggestion that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is "almost treasonous": "If this guy prints more money between now and the election, I don't what y'all would do to him in Iowa, but we would treat him pretty ugly down in Texas." Or former House Speaker Newt Gingrich explaining his infidelity: "There's no question at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate."

But a string of unforced errors, when combined, can reinforce unfavorable perceptions of the candidate, as Romney aides privately acknowledge. And that's the trouble Romney faces ? just as John Kerry damaged himself when he racked up a series of equivocating comments on a series of issues while the Democratic nominee in 2004.

President George W. Bush's re-election campaign used Kerry's waffling ? conflicts between his votes and his quotes ? to cast him as an opportunist who would shift his positions to win votes.

Romney gave his critics a similar opening over the past few days. In Ohio, he refused to say whether he would support a local ballot initiative even as he visited a site where volunteers were making hundreds of phone calls to help Republicans defeat it. Issue Two would repeal Ohio Gov. John Kasich's restrictions on public sector employee bargaining.

It turned out that Romney had already weighed in, supporting Kasich's efforts in a June Facebook post. And, a day after the Ohio visit, Romney made clear where he stood, saying he was "110 percent" behind the anti-union effort.

There have been other instances of comments that could come back to haunt him. In Arizona at one point, he tried to highlight his father's role running an auto company but inadvertently painted himself as a have, rather than a have not.

"See, I'm a Detroit guy, so, you know, I only have domestics," he said, then added: "I have a couple of Cadillacs, at two different houses. You know, small crossovers."

During a recent debate, Romney suggested that the discovery of illegal immigrants working on his yard during his first presidential campaign was a problem ? not because it was illegal, but because "I'm running for office, for Pete's sake."

Comments like those could partly explain why Romney has kept a limited public schedule and favors closed events and appearances that play down spontaneous interaction with reporters.

Still, in some ways, the damage may already have been done. Expect to hear Romney's impolitic comments frequently as Republicans and Democrats alike try to derail Romney.

Generators seized from NY Wall Street protesters (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Anti-Wall Street protesters' plans to camp in a New York park throughout the city's harsh winter were dealt a blow on Friday when the fire department confiscated six generators and about a dozen cans of fuel.

With the first snow forecast to fall on Saturday, the "Occupy Wall Street" movement against economic inequality lost the generators that had been powering heat, computers and a kitchen in the Lower Manhattan camp they set up six weeks ago.

"They think that taking the 'power' away will take the power away, and that's absolutely not true at all," said Occupy Wall Street spokesman Michael Booth.

The movement has sparked so-called occupations in cities across the United States and elsewhere in the world. But recent evictions in places like Oakland, California, where police used tear gas and stun grenades, have New York protesters on edge.

On Friday in Nashville, Tennessee, protesters were returning to the Tennessee Legislative Plaza in front of the state capitol after being rousted from their campsite by state troopers overnight.

"Stay positive and breath campers: the only thing that can break us is us!" OccupyWallStNYC posted on Twitter on Friday.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the generators were confiscated because they were considered a safety hazard and it was not a bid to remove protesters.

"As long as they don't take away anybody else's rights to say what they want to say, or to not say anything, to go about their business safely ... at the moment it will continue," Bloomberg told local radio.

A possible showdown between Occupy Wall Street and police was averted two weeks ago when the private owners of the publicly accessible park postponed a cleanup of the area, which protesters feared was a bid to remove them.

Bloomberg has repeatedly said that the city cannot evict the protesters unless the park owner, Brookfield Office Properties, made an official complaint.

Occupy Wall Street spokesman Ed Needham said that city authorities had inspected the camp on Thursday. On Friday morning about 30 firefighters escorted by police returned to confiscate the generators and fuel.

"This was following a real, determined and extensive effort on our part to make sure we were working effectively with the fire department and the police department," Needham said. "We run a safe operation here and we're trying to do our best."

Protesters say they are upset that the billions of dollars in bank bailouts doled out during the recession allowed banks to resume earning huge profits while average Americans have had no relief from high unemployment and job insecurity.

They also believe the richest 1 percent of Americans do not pay their fair share in taxes.

Young South Africans call for jobs, end to poverty (AP)

JOHANNESBURG ? Young South Africans brought their frustration over poverty and joblessness to the streets Thursday, responding to a call by the tough-talking youth leader of the governing African National Congress who has clashed with older party leaders over economic policy.

Police and ANC Youth League marshals kept a close watch as several hundred protesters gathered in a central Johannesburg square, dance music blaring from speakers. Similar protests have been held around the world, but here protesters occasionally broke into chants dating from the struggle against apartheid.

Protester Tsholofelo Stephina Bester said the ANC must act faster to help the poor. Bester said that when she graduated from high school 10 years ago, she couldn't afford further studies to pursue her dream of becoming a social worker. She has been looking for steady work since. For the last two years, she has volunteered as an AIDS counselor, earning "pocket money" of 1,500 rand (about $190) a month. She and her 7-year-old daughter get by on that and welfare assistance.

"I want them not to promise without delivering," she said of ANC leaders. "I want them to deliver."

ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema plans to lead protesters from the square where they gathered early Thursday on an "economic freedom march" to the headquarters of South Africa's mining bosses and to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, then about 60 kilometers (about 40 miles) north to Pretoria, the seat of government. After an overnight vigil in a Pretoria sports stadium, Malema will present government officials with his demands, which include jobs, housing and other help for the poor, and nationalizing the mines.

ANC leaders say talk about nationalizing mines undermines investor confidence, while Malema calls them "cowards," accusing them of being afraid to take on powerful mine bosses. Malema also says whites remain privileged 17 years after the end of apartheid, and that big business largely remains in white hands.

Thursday's protest may be aimed as much at influencing ANC economic policy as showing older leaders Malema cannot be ignored. Next year, President Jacob Zuma faces an internal party leadership vote that could also determine who will be South Africa's next president.

Gaddafi son seeks aircraft to surrender: NTC source (Reuters)

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) ? Negotiating the surrender of Saif al-Islam, the son of Libya's slain dictator Muammar Gaddafi, would present logistical and security challenges to the world's top war crimes court which will examine various possible scenarios to bring him to trial.

The International Criminal Court had charged Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam and Libya's former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi with crimes against humanity for the bombing and shooting of civilian protesters in February.

A source with Libya's National Transitional Council said on Thursday Saif al-Islam wants an aircraft, possibly arranged by a neighboring country, to take him out of Libya's southern desert so he can turn himself in to the ICC.

If arranged, Saif al-Islam would be transported to The Hague where the ICC shares a detention unit with the U.N. Yugoslavia war crimes tribunal and the Special Court for Sierra Leone, where former Liberian president Charles Taylor is on trial.

The court is trying to confirm with the NTC whether Saif al-Islam wants to surrender and, if the information is confirmed, will consider the best measures for his transfer, ICC spokesman Fadi El Abdallah said.

"It depends on where the suspect is and how we can get into contact with him and what would be necessary to bring him to The Hague. There are different scenarios," El Abdallah said.

With no police force of its own, the ICC has relied in the past on state co-operation to have its suspects arrested and many of them have remained fugitives such as Sudan President Omar al-Bashir whose government has snubbed the court.

Still, the ICC assisted in transporting several Sudanese rebels to The Hague in recent years to face charges over the killing of 12 African Union peacekeepers in Darfur in 2007.

The Dutch authorities provide assistance to the Hague-based courts in the transfer of suspects to the detention center, such as when former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic was flown to Rotterdam on a Serbian government plane.

Mladic was then transferred by the Dutch authorities by helicopter or car to the detention center in The Hague.

"The ICC itself is responsible for transfers to the Netherlands. Upon arrival of a suspect in the Netherlands, we give logistical support," a spokesman at the Dutch foreign ministry said.

If Saif al-Islam were to slip into Niger, an ICC member state, the Niger government has an obligation to arrest him, while Tunisia and Mali are also member states. Algeria is not.

"The question is to what extent these countries are ready to manage the pressure that will be put on them by an ICC transfer as it will have implications for them with other African countries," said Damien Helly at the European Union Institute for Security Studies.

The African Union has been critical of the ICC's focus on Africa and has opposed the arrest warrant for Sudan's Bashir, who has traveled to ICC member states Malawi, Chad, Kenya and Djibouti in the past without being arrested.

Surrendering to the court would, at the very worst, put Saif al-Islam in prison.

But Helly questioned whether Saif al-Islam was "desperately trying to save his life" or whether his offer to surrender was a way of buying time or bargaining to improve his situation.

DEFENSE

Once in The Hague, Saif al-Islam would be held at the ICC detention center, located near the beach in a leafy residential neighborhood in The Hague.

The detention center is built next to an old prison where Dutch resistance fighters were imprisoned by the Nazis and inmates have single-occupant cells about 10 square meters in size, where they can watch TV, read or work on their cases.

Each cell in the ICC wing contains a bed, desk, bookshelves, a cupboard, toilet, hand basin and a telephone, although calls are placed by the centre's staff. Detainees can work on their cases using computers but cannot access email or the internet.

They can engage in sports activities and other hobbies.

But if he arrives in The Hague, Saif al-Islam would be also required to appear in court for an 'initial appearance', where he would be formally charged and informed of his rights.

ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo accused Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam and al-Senussi of drawing up a "predetermined plan" to kill protesters and said that Gaddafi gave the orders, while Saif al-Islam organized the recruitment of mercenaries.

Peter Robinson, a legal adviser to former Bosnian Serb president Radovan Karadzic who is on trial at the Yugoslavia tribunal, also said Saif al-Islam should not try to defend himself by arguing he was just obeying orders.

"A person is required under international law not to obey an illegal order. It would not be useful for Saif al-Islam to defend himself on the grounds that he was just obeying orders from his father," Robinson said.

He said a more useful defense would be to argue that crimes were committed upon orders from lower-level commanders.

Geert-Jan Knoops, a Dutch-based international criminal law attorney, said Saif al-Islam could challenge the ICC case on two main fronts, arguing an "abuse of process" or by proving there is no evidence of a "political plan" to kill protesters.

He said Saif al-Islam could argue that the ICC prosecution was politically influenced and forced by the United Nations to achieve a regime change instead of protection of human rights in Libya. "It can be argued that the ICC prosecution and procedures are abused; in other words: abuse of process," Knoops said.

We've seen this coming for a few weeks now, and today it was announced that after 10 years together and some €1.5 billion in profits, Sony its indeed buying out the Ericsson share in Sony Ericsson. 

Ericsson confirmed the buyout this morning and will receive a payday of €1.05 billion in return for its half of the partnership. The deal also sees sony receive an IP cross-licensing agreement as well as "five essential patent families."

Why, you ask?

The transaction gives Sony an opportunity to rapidly integrate smartphones into its broad array of network-connected consumer electronics devices – including tablets, televisions and personal computers - for the benefit of consumers and the growth of its business. The transaction also provides Sony with a broad intellectual property (IP) cross-licensing agreement covering all products and services of Sony as well as ownership of five essential patent families relating to wireless handset technology.

Asian shares mixed ahead of Europe plan

TOKYO (AP) ? Asian shares were mixed Tuesday as investors waited for European leaders to unveil a plan to tackle the continent's ongoing debt crisis.

Markets turned cautious after solid gains in Asia the previous day, unable to extend a Wall Street rally overnight.

Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average slipped 0.3 percent to 8,820.29 as exporters struggled in the face of a strong yen. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.6 percent to 1,887.76, and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.5 percent to 4,234.90.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose 0.4 percent to 18,838.06. Benchmarks in Taiwan, Singapore and New Zealand also advanced modestly.

European leaders have said they made progress at a weekend summit and plan to unveil concrete plans for containing the crisis by Wednesday.

The 17-nation eurozone is set to shore up its bailout fund to contain the debt turmoil that threatens to engulf more countries, and German lawmakers said the plan could boost the fund's lending capacity to more than euro1 trillion ($1.39 trillion).

Overnight in New York, the Dow Jones industrial average finished with a gain of 104.83 points, or 0.9 percent, at 11,913.62.

The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose to 1,254.19, marking the highest close for the S&P 500 since Aug. 3, just as Washington was resolving a showdown over raising the country's borrowing limit.

In currencies, the dollar rose slightly to 76.14 yen from 76.05 yen late Monday in New York. The euro stood at $1.3905 from $1.3951.

Seinfeld actor in Israel uses comedy to push peace (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Former Seinfeld actor Jason Alexander says he isn't kidding around when it comes to promoting Mideast peace.

Alexander, who played George Costanza in the legendary sitcom for a decade, was asked by Israeli President Shimon Peres in a meeting on Tuesday for advice on how to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Alexander said, that through comedy and humor, he hopes to help advance the idea of two states for two people.

Peres playfully asked the actor if he could call him "George." Alexander laughed, and pointing to a crowd of reporters, said: "You can. Not them."

He met with Peres during a visit to the Holy Land with a delegation from OneVoice, an international grassroots group working with mainstream Israelis and Palestinians to encourage peace.

October's Skywatching Treats for Halloween (SPACE.com)

The eastern sky these fine late October nights is filled with deep sky treats for stargazers of all types. There is a bit of something for everyone.

For the naked eye observer, the first of the brilliant stars of winter start to peek over the eastern horizon: Capella and Aldebaran. Three of the nearest galactic star clusters are visible to the naked eye: the Pleiades, the Hyades, and the Perseus Moving Cluster.

The October night sky map here provides a reference showing where to look to see this month's night sky treats.

Galactic star clusters are groupings of stars which share a common origin relatively recently on the astronomical time scale. Their stars are often similar in color and brightness, and share a common motion through the galaxy.

The Pleiades is a compact cluster of young bright stars located 410 light-years from the sun. It was known as the Seven Sisters in antiquity, although really only six stars are easily counted with the naked eye. How many can you see? Its Japanese name is Subaru, and its six brightest stars are well depicted in the logo of this Japanese car manufacturer.

The Hyades is much closer to us than the Pleiades, 150 light-years away, but its stars are older and fainter than those of the Pleiades, so it covers a much larger area of the sky. It is easily spotted as it appears to surround the bright red giant Aldebaran.

But, this is merely an accident of perspective, as Aldebaran is only 65 light-years away, much closer to us than the Hyades.

The Perseus Moving Cluster is less well known than the Pleiades and Hyades. It surrounds Mirfak, also known as Alpha Persei, which is 593 light-years away and an actual member of the cluster. [Haunting Photos of Spooky Nebulas]

Although all three of these clusters are easily visible from a dark sky site with the naked eye, they all benefit from a closer look with binoculars. Look in particular for the many pretty pairs of stars they contain.

Under very dark skies, the Pleiades show faint wisps of nebulosity from a dust cloud through which their stars are passing at present.

More October sky treats

Binoculars reveal several other deep sky treats in this part of the sky.

Circling the "north star" Polaris directly opposite the Big Dipper is the bright W-shaped constellation Cassiopeia. The upper part of the "W" points the way to the Andromeda Galaxy, number 31 in 18th century astronomer Charles Messier's catalog of deep sky objects.

In binoculars, the Andromeda Galaxy looks like a small faint cloud. We are seeing only the bright central nucleus; long-exposure photographs reveal that the galaxy is far larger than our moon in the sky.

If you have a telescope and a dark country sky, look for Andromeda?s two satellite galaxies. These are farther away than you might expect from photographs; those same long exposure photographs mislead by making the main galaxy seem much larger than it appears in small telescopes.

Once you?ve located the Andromeda Galaxy in binoculars, see if you can see it with your naked eyes.

In a dark moonless sky it is about the farthest object visible to the naked eye, looking like a tiny wisp detached from the Milky Way. If you spot it, you can say that you?ve observed something over two million light years away with nothing but your unaided eye.

Trick to see star clusters

About halfway between Cassiopeia and Mirfak look for the Perseus Double Cluster. This gives you two galactic clusters for the price of one.

These clusters are much farther away than the first three we looked at. They are about 7,000 and 8,100 light-years away. Early astronomers mistook these clusters for stars, and assigned them the letters "chi" (Greek) and "h" (Roman).

They are also known by their numbers in the New General Catalog: 869 and 884. It?s a mystery why Messier didn?t include them in his catalog, since they are far brighter than many objects he cataloged.

Finally, take a look with binoculars or a telescope at the area around Capella.

The constellation Auriga forms a beautiful circlet of bright stars, enclosing one of the richest areas of the Milky Way. There are many bright star clusters in this area, including three in Messie's catalog.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Roberto Soldado's late goal salvaged a 1-1 draw for Valencia against Athletic Bilbao, while Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 with Mallorca on Sunday in the Spanish league.

After an evenly matched first half with both team hitting the post, Iker Muniain scored Bilbao's 72nd-minute opener when he deftly dribbled across the edge of the area before shooting powerfully into the right corner of the net.

Bilbao appeared set to record its third straight league win before Soldado reached Ever Banega's pass, beat goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz with one touch and rolled home the equalizer in the 89th for his sixth goal of the season.

The game saw Valencia midfielder Sergio Canales and Bilbao veteran Carlos Gurpegi both helped off the pitch with leg injuries.

In Madrid, visitors Mallorca went ahead two minutes in through Israel striker Tomer Hemed's fourth spot kick in the last three matches.

Radamel Falcao pulled Atletico even at Vicente Calderon stadium with a penalty of his own in the 42nd after he was fouled in the area to break a three-game scoring drought for his team in league play.

"It wasn't in our plans to draw today," said Atletico coach Gregorio Manzano, whose team extended its winless streak to four games in league play. "It was a tough game for us. We were facing a well-organized defense that left us very few spaces."

Reading The New York Times this week felt like reading a screenplay of a?Law & Order SVU episode. This episode involved a mentally instable?individual who let loose over 50 exotic animals before killing himself. The?Ohio police then hunted, shot, and killed these animals. Terry Thompson was?clearly instable. He had just completed a jail sentence for possessing?illegal firearms, had a history of abusing animals, and had vast debt over?unpaid taxes. Why this man was allowed to house lions and tigers in the?first place, I have no idea. At first, I regarded this news story as?somewhat comical given how ridiculous the whole thing was. Then, upon?reflection, I found a darker depth to the whole incident.

Peter Laufer, in his New York Times Op-Ed, channels the fear of these?animals that had to be hunted by the police.?To me, this extenuates the root of the issue. We should not feel for these?animals as if they were our own pets and our own responsibility. I?sympathize with animals that are poached in the wild. However, the only?beings I feel for, in this case, are the hypothetical human beings who?could have been mauled and killed if these animals had not been shot down.?Clearly, tranquillizers would have been a more ideal option. However, the?Ohio police are not trained to take down large animals alive.

Disagree with me if you will, but I see this chaotic news story as a?hyperbolic example of what is wrong with people being too attached to their?pets and to animals in general. I firmly believe that human life should?always come first. Pets are dependents that stay dependent until they die.?They have no future and no goals in life. Not too say that pets cannot?express affection or promote happiness in their owners, but they cannot?embody the complexities and the potential of a human life.

I should not have to feel like a bad person for saying that the Muskingum?County Sheriff, Matt Lutz, made 100% the right choice in ordering the?killing of these animals instead of sedating them with tranquillizing?darts. Even wildlife experts agreed that killing the animals was the only
way to ensure the safety of the people of Zanesville. As Alexander?Chancellor of the British newspaper The Guardian commentates, ?There?seems now to be quite a sizable number of people in America who would?sooner put human lives at risk than cause a wild animal to die.?

Granted, I have never had a pet. However, I would say that what happened in?Ohio is a bizarre circumstance that all in all had the best ending?possible. It is one of those SVU episodes where they end up catching their?perpetrator before it is too late.

German satellite expected to hit Earth on weekend (AP)

BERLIN ? German scientists still don't know exactly when or where pieces of a defunct satellite hurtling toward the atmosphere will hit the Earth this weekend.

Andreas Schuetz, a spokesman for the German Aerospace Center, said Saturday the best estimate is that the ROSAT scientific research satellite will crash into the Earth sometime between late Saturday and Sunday up to 1200 GMT (8 a.m. EDT). An update is expected later Saturday.

Parts of the minivan-sized satellite will burn up during re-entry but up to 30 fragments weighing 1.87 tons (1.7 metric tons) could crash at speeds up to 280 mph (450 kph).

The satellite orbits every 90 minutes and it could hit Earth anywhere along its path ? a vast swath that includes much of the planet outside the poles.

Hundreds of Afghans hold anti-Pakistan protest (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) ? Hundreds of Afghans took to the streets of Kabul on Sunday to condemn recent shelling of border towns by Pakistan's army and accusing its powerful spy agency of involvement in the assassination of the country's ex-President Burhanuddin Rabbani.

The protest comes amid heightened tensions between two neighbors, with Afghan officials blaming Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Taliban's senior leadership of plotting to kill Rabbani.

Under tight security, the one-hour rally passed without any incidents. But protesters appeared angry and carried large banners with slogans as they changed "Death to Pakistan" and "Death to ISI."

"Pakistan and its ISI must stop interfering in Afghanistan. Our patience is running out," said Daoud Kodamani, a 22-year-old university student.

"Fighting our country's enemies is nothing new for Afghans and Pakistan is another enemy to fight with," he said.

Many Afghans have long accused Pakistan and the ISI of backing insurgent groups to further Islamabad's own interests, which Pakistan denies.

Rabbani, who was head of the High Peace Council tasked with trying to reach a negotiated settlement to the 10-year war was killed at his Kabul home on September 20 by a suicide bomber claiming to be carrying a message of peace from the Taliban leadership.

Rabbani's killing was widely seen a major blow to the peace process and came amid worsening security in the country as NATO-led troops begin handing security responsibility to Afghan troops in preparation for full withdrawal from the country by the end of 2014.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai hinted on Saturday he had lost hope in pursuing peace talks with the Taliban, whose leadership council, or Shura, is believed to be based in the Pakistani city of Quetta.

Karzai said Afghanistan should be negotiating peace with Pakistan instead.

Afghan provincial officials say Pakistan's military had fired hundreds of rockets between September 21 and September 25 in eastern Kunar and Nuristan provinces, which share a long border with lawless tribal areas inside Pakistan.

Although, the shelling did not cause major casualties, it followed more than a month of bombardments by Pakistan's military in June and July that Afghanistan said had killed at least 42 people.

Pakistan has repeatedly blamed Afghanistan for giving safe haven to militants on its side of the border, particularly in Kunar province, leaving it vulnerable to counter-attack when it chases them out of its own ethnic Pashtun tribal areas.
