Location: 1917 Logan Ave. S., Minneapolis

Firm: Encompass Inc., Eden Prairie

Completion date: November 2011

Project team: Howard Noziska, Kent Jones, Encompass Inc.; Jerry Theis, Theis Construction

Editor?s note: The Feats of Engineering feature, which runs occasionally in Finance & Commerce, features projects completed by members of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Minnesota. The content comes from ACEC and the firms.

Aging, structurally unsound retaining walls are a relatively common problem in Minneapolis. The leaning wall behind St. Paul?s Episcopal Church, holding back the prominent hill overlooking Lake of the Isles on which the landmark church was built, posed extraordinary problems ? ?a challenge of almost biblical proportions,? said Howard Noziska, president of Encompass Inc., the Eden Prairie-based engineering and forensic analysis firm retained to find a solution.

Noziska describes the steepness of St. Paul?s site as ?scary.? But the steepness was only part of the challenge in fixing the collapsing wall and stabilizing the hill. Compounding the problem was an extremely restricted location that not only offered physical barriers ? stairs blocking access to the wall ? but religious and cultural barriers as well, in the form of the buried cremains of deceased members of the congregation and the integrity of a historic structure that had to be assured.

Conditions were exacerbated by the fact that small trees planted many years ago were now fully grown, with their roots a major part of the problem, and several seasons of record snowfalls and heavy rain had loaded the soil with moisture. Taken together, all of these conditions were increasing both the vertical and lateral loads on the retaining wall itself ? a structure a foot thick, 6 feet high and nearly 60 feet long.

?The hill was doing what comes naturally,? said Noziska, ?sliding, moving downhill, and putting great pressure on the old retaining wall and related sidewalks and stairways. Uncorrected, it presented a potential danger to churchgoers as well as a threat to the church structure itself.?

Eden Prairie-based Encompass Inc. designed and supervised the installation by Theis Construction of a series of ?helical piers? ? large screw-like rods, twisted into the soil to provide the counterbalancing forces the retaining wall needed to restrain and stabilize the soil behind the wall.

Any solution had to be affordable for a congregation with limited resources, yet one that would endure for decades. Encompass? answer was a creative combination of advanced engineering thinking and old-fashioned common sense.

The firm designed and supervised the installation by Theis Construction of a series of ?helical piers? ? large screw-like rods, twisted into the soil to provide the counterbalancing forces the retaining wall needed to restrain and stabilize the soil behind the wall. This created counterforces to the hillside?s natural inclination to keep sliding and pressuring the wall itself.

A new foot-thick reinforced concrete wall with new buttresses was strengthened by the installation of extensive rebar reinforcing rods.

Because of the accessibility problem, all of the concrete required for construction had to be ?bucketed? up the hillside. To reach the difficult work area, temporary bridges were built across the steep stairways, sufficient to provide access to the work area by Bobcat without blocking entry to the church for services.

The result? ?A strong new retaining wall that will serve the congregation and protect St. Paul?s historic structure for decades into the future,? Noziska said.

Should Obama tap America's emergency oil supply? (The Week)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The Week - With gas prices climbing worryingly high, the president is under pressure from all sides to do something before rising costs derail the recoveryWith oil and gasoline prices rising dramatically, Republicans and Democrats alike are demanding action to keep energy costs from shattering the fragile economic recovery. The national average price for a gallon of gas hit $3.65 last week, inching perilously closer to the critical $4-a-gallon level. While GOP politicians are reviving their "drill, baby, drill" calls, saying increasing domestic oil supply is the key to energy independence, Democrats are urging President Obama to tap into the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve to bring down oil prices. Should Obama turn on the spigots?

IBM: We're on the cusp of the Quantum Computing revolution (video)

Technology's holy grail is the development of a "perfect" Quantum Computer. Traditional computers recognize information as bits: binary information that represent "On" or "Off" states. A Quantum Computer uses qubits; operating in superposition, it exists in all states simultaneously -- not just "On" or "Off," but every possible state in-between. It would theoretically be able to instantly access every piece of information at the same time, meaning that a 250 qubit computer would contain more data than there are particles in the universe. IBM thinks it's closer than ever to realizing this dream and if you want to know more, we have the full details after the break.

Revenge is a dish best not served on 'Loser'

Chism, Jeremy, Cassandra, Emily, Megan, Christine and Daphne faced a table packed with their biggest temptations.

By Ree Hines

The last few weeks have been drama-packed on "The Biggest Loser," and if anyone thought that trend would be over now that Conda and co. booted both Adrian and Roy out of the game, they were mistaken.

Instead, things got off to desperate start Tuesday night as the players gathered for a temptation challenge ? a particularly tempting one. Faced with plate after plate of all of their favorite foods, the contestants had the option to eat their way to power. The one to consume the most calories could switch the game around, deciding which members made up each team and who would train them. And they could do so anonymously.

The first to eat was Mark, who downed a couple of plates of venison worth 312 calories. (Yes, someone's favorite food was venison. It seems Kimmy loves to eat deer. Good thing, too, as she confessed in a frightening aside that she's mowed down 12 of them in her car! Bambi, beware.)

Chris, Kim and Cassandra also chowed down, enjoying pizza and peanut butter cups to varying degrees, but really their calorie totals didn't matter. And neither did Mark's. That's because Daphne, the one person in the game who could really benefit from a shakeup, ate nine plates of peanut butter cups -- that's 1890 calories' worth. Needless to say, she won.

But she didn't share that news with the rest of the game. Instead, Alison Sweeney announced that someone won, and then announced the changes, which were, to say the least, ineffective and underwhelming.

Rather than put power players together on one team, such as Conda, Jeremy, Chism and Mark, where they would eventually have to break down their alliance and pick each other off, Daphne only chose to swap Conda and Jeremy's places on the red and black teams. In other words, while Daphne annoyed them, the balance of power stayed the same. And while she technically remained anonymous, everyone knew she was responsible for the switcheroo. ?

Chris Haston / NBC

So tensions remained as high as they ever had, and the target on Daphne's back only grew. Eventually, after trainer Bob Harper pushed her to do it, Daphne admitted that she was the mastermind behind the bad move. But that, too, didn't make a difference. Daphne was the odd player out without her brother, and the fix was in.

"I think they're trying to purposely sabotage this weigh-in," she noticed. "They have been eating bread all week long. Every time I turn around, I'm seeing somebody put bread in their mouth."

Which meant the only chance she had to stay in the game was to earn immunity by dropping the most pounds ? a particularly daunting task after dropping 12 pounds last week and binging on peanut butter cups this week. Ultimately, it was a task she wasn't up for.

After the red team sailed through an easy weigh-in, Team Black, with the exception of Chris, put up one bad number after another. Heck, Conda even gained a pound, and Daphne gained two. But if fussing and fighting shed pounds, they would have all had a banner week, because the scale-side showdown was over-the-top with smack talk and finger pointing.

In the elimination room, doomed Daphne admitted that her decision to swap Conda and Jeremy wasn't gameplay. It was personal and in-part, an effort to get revenge for the way her brother Adrian was treated in weeks past.

Rather than just let that parting statement go, Conda chimed in.

"I would just like to say that I don't hold on to grudges," she said in a statement sure to make viewers roll their eyes as much as Conda usually rolls her own. "I don't seek revenge on people. I'm a role model and example to my daughter."

Ooh, boy. After a bit more bickering, Daphne said goodbye to the ranch and hello to a chance to leave the drama behind and lose weight back home with her family.

What did you think of the drama-packed episode? Was the black team wrong to throw the weigh-in, or did they just speed up the inevitable by getting rid of Daphne now? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

(AP) ? When the Memphis Grizzlies lost Zach Randolph to a torn ligament on Jan. 1, the question then was whether they could remain a playoff-caliber team in his absence.

If the first half of the season is any indication, it looks as if Memphis plans on being in the thick of the playoff race when Randolph returns.

Marc Gasol had 15 points and 14 rebounds, Rudy Gay scored 14 points and the Grizzlies beat the Philadelphia 76ers 89-76 on Tuesday night to remain in seventh place in the Western Conference.

"I think a lot of us don't understand how well we've done for ourselves without having Zach there," point guard Mike Conley said. "He's a big part of our team going forward and last season in the playoffs. With his absence, still being in the hunt and in the playoffs like we are is amazing."

Memphis has gone 18-12 in Randolph's absence and won for the fifth time in its last six games.

O.J. Mayo added 13 points and Marreese Speights had 12 to help the Grizzlies (19-15) move a season high-tying four games above .500.

Gasol, who's headed to this weekend's All-Star Game in Orlando, finished three assists shy of a triple double.

"Marc was solid," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "He was around the basket. He was rebounding. He was passing the ball. He does what Marc does. He's a little tired. I told him to just go to the All-Star game and drink a couple of mojitos and enjoy himself. You know, don't play.

"He said he's going to take a couple charges though. You know Marc. He's going to go out there and compete and play because that's who he is."

Jrue Holiday scored 22 points ? none in the fourth ? for the Atlantic Division-leading Sixers, who shot just 37 percent while losing their fourth straight and sixth in their last eight. Rookie Lavoy Allen had 14 points for Philadelphia, and Andre Iguodala added 11 on 5-of-14 shooting.

"We just haven't been good offensively for a week or two now. We've been in a little funk offensively," Iguodala said.

Philadelphia trailed by 20 after the first quarter before rallying to pull within three late in the second, and was down 47-42 at halftime.

Holiday, who finished 9 for 18 from the field, scored nine of Philadelphia's first 13 points of the third quarter to keep the Sixers close. His 3-pointer with 3:30 left made it 61-55.

Reserve guard Louis Williams hit another 3-pointer with 46.2 left in the third to pull Philadelphia to 64-60, but Memphis pushed its lead back to nine on back-to-back buckets by reserves Quincy Pondexter and Hamed Haddadi.

"It's simple to me," Williams said. "We're just not competing at our highest level right now, and we're getting beat."

The Grizzlies allowed Philadelphia to get no closer than four points in the fourth. Tony Allen made a pair of key defensive plays down the stretch for the Grizzlies, forcing an airball by Iguodala with Memphis leading by five, and later getting a steal on a Sixers fast break.

Gay then put the game out of reach with a 3-pointer with 2:10 left, helping Memphis improve to 6-3 this season on the second game of back-to-backs. The Grizzlies lost 97-93 at Houston on Monday.

"Losing Zach was big we all know. We turned into a makeshift team again. We lost Rudy Gay (to a shoulder injury) last year," Allen said. "All we can do is try to hold down the fort until (Randolph) gets back. From what I hear, he's having a great recovery."

Playing a Sixers team that came into the game ranked first in the NBA in scoring defense, Memphis made seven of its first nine shots in building a 15-7 first-quarter lead. A Philadelphia timeout didn't slow the Grizzlies, who scored the next 12 points ? including two 3-pointers by Mayo ? to take a 27-7 lead.

Gasol was at the center of the run, getting four points, five assists and four rebounds in the first quarter.

Philadelphia trailed 30-10 after the first after shooting 4 of 20 from the field in the period. The 76ers' 10 points were the fewest Memphis has allowed in any quarter this season.

"Horrible start," Sixers coach Doug Collins said. "We dug ourselves a huge hole and fought out, but made mistakes at the wrong time. Once again, we hold a team to 40-percent shooting, and we are struggling mightily to score.

The Sixers finally got into an offensive rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring Memphis 9-2 over the first 3 minutes.

Holiday then made his first of three 3s in the period with 5:13 left to cut Philadelphia's deficit to 10. He scored 13 straight points for the 7ters to pull them to 43-40 late in the quarter.

After an abysmal first quarter, the Sixers connected on 13 of their first 17 shots in the second and trailed by five at halftime.

NOTES: 76ers F Elton Brand (right thumb sprain) was a game-time scratch. ... Former world champion boxer James "Lights Out" Toney was among the 14,258 in attendance. ... At halftime, Memphis' mascot, Grizz, was introduced to the crowd as the team's second All-Star. Memphis' mascot has been selected to join Gasol at this weekend's All-Star festivities in Orlando.

What does living in a city do to your brain? It was with a slight sense of foreboding that I agreed to attend last night?s discussion event aiming to answer that question.

The reason for my unease was simple: having recently traded the snow-capped mountains and crystalline lakes of a small village in southern Germany for the skyscrapers and concrete skies of central London, I was nervous that the evening?s discussion would cast doubt upon the wisdom of my decision to head for the city. Steeling myself, I dodged through the rush-hour traffic and packed myself, accompanied by my ever-growing sense of trepidation, into the tangled web of sweaty armpits and flailing limbs of a packed underground carriage.

The choice of The Assembly, a small east London venue, for the discussion heightened my trepidation: the building is disquietingly close to the site of Bethlem Royal Hospital, popularly known as Bedlam - the world?s first and most notorious mental institution.

Novelist Will Self, one of the evening?s two main speakers, gave the audience a whistle-stop tour of Bedlam?s 800-year history.

There were a variety of ?conditions? that could land someone in Bedlam, he told us, including giving birth to a child out of wedlock, harbouring socialist sympathies, or simply being poor. If you were unlucky enough to land up in the notorious institution, you could look forward to treatments ranging from lobotomies and electro-shock therapy, to infection with malaria, to induced insulin comas, to the ancient art of whipping and restraint.

Bringing things up-to-date, Self suggested that London's fetish for CCTV cameras, despite their ability to prevent crime being entirely unproven, is a symptom of paranoia. And those people walking along the city?s streets chatting into small hands-free microphones certainly give the outward appearance of being insane. ?A Victorian mental patient released today would feel right at home,? he joked.

But does living in the urban environment change your brain? The evening?s second speaker, science writer Alok Jha, toured through the current research on the topic. A recent paper published in Nature looked into some of the differences in brain activity found between city dwellers and those living in rural areas. The researchers, based at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, found that activity in regions of the brain involved in the regulation of anxiety and emotion was higher for those living in urban areas. They speculate that this could be one of the reasons for the higher prevalence of mental disorders in city dwellers.

"There?s a 39 per cent increase in mood disorders, a 21 per cent increase in anxiety disorders and people in cities have double the rate of schizophrenia," explained Jha.

Researchers from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, argue that a perceived lack of control over one?s daily life may be the reason some people feel more stressed in urban environments. Jha explained how simple urban planning techniques and the use of green spaces could easily dramatically improve the quality of life in cities such as London.? And, with almost 70 per cent of the world?s population expected to live in urban areas by 2050, investment in such techniques is increasingly worthwhile.

Alongside the excellent talks, themed food and drinks were on offer from the Blanch & Shock food design team, who were behind one of the courses at this month?s Eat Rich or Die Trying event at London?s Kemistry gallery. Among the treats on offer were a rich chocolate cake, representing the one of the many addictions of modern urbanites, and a cocktail appropriately named "lunacy".

While Self and Jha highlighted the stress and mental difficulties of daily London life, I left happy with my decision to join the world?s ever-growing number of urbanites. At? least living in the city means that there are great events like this to keep you entertained on a Monday night.

What does living in London do to your brain? was the first in The Assembly and Container?s Monday Club 2012 series of events.

World Cup Soccer Jerseys ? Wear One Whenever A Game Is On ...

A lot of people love sports, especially soccer. Everyone certainly gets thrilled to watch their favorite soccer teams fight for the country?s honor. Every individual is gunning for a certain team, and, most of the times, that affinity for a particular team is so strong that people go to great lengths just to show their support.

Take a look at the most recent World Cup. Hordes of fans showed up in every game just to show their support for their teams. They sat there, with their world cup soccer jerseys, shouting words of excitement as their team battled it out with opponents.

Soccer fans are considered as one of the most supportive and passionate people. They are very proud of their teams. They express that pride in various ways. Wearing soccer jerseys is one way of doing so. This is comparable to a nation?s flag. There?s probably no one who doesn?t love and respect our nation. Do you know why so many people enlist themselves? It?s because we are all willing to do anything to show how much we love our country. They are proud of being in the service. The badges they are so proud of represent the nation they love so much. It?s the same thing with soccer fans. For them, wearing a soccer jersey that bears their team?s name is as sacred as holding the United States flag.

You can help others think that this is a bit of an exaggeration. There are times when it is. However, there?s perfectly nothing wrong with it. Is there a better way to show how much you love and support something than having that insignia on yourself? This is very similar to having a tattooed picture of your wife or kid.

Soccer is as popular as basketball in the United States. This spectator sport can draw in thousands of people to a certain arena. Expect to see nothing short of packed bleachers every time there is a game and people are wearing their respective jerseys. If you were a soccer fan and you?d want to feel the excitement, try wearing one.

But some people would not be able to afford such jerseys. In case you don?t have enough money to buy the authentic ones, you can always look for replica soccer jerseys. These will give you the opportunity to express your support for your teams. Who says expressing your national pride has to be costly?

Check out the latest range of fan apparel including usa soccer t shirts available online and show your support for your National soccer team in style.

Legal Skills Prof Blog: Who owns the copyright in students' class ...

? Students Think We?re More Out of Touch Than We Really Are | Main | Student Lost in Professor?s Office ?

February 17, 2012

Who owns the copyright in students' class notes?

You'd think it would belong to the students, right?? Well, a couple of universities are claiming otherwise in an effort to thwart those pesky websites selling?course prep materials. From MindShift:

California State University and University of California campuses are taking new steps to limit what students can do with their class notes: At least one CSU Chico student recently was reported to judicial affairs for selling notes to a website, while a newly updated UC Berkeley policy restricts how students share their notes with others.

The policies raise questions about whether instructors or students have copyrights to the notes students take in class. While the California Education Code prohibits students and others from selling class notes ? and many campuses have policies that also ban unauthorized note-selling?? critics say students, not instructors, own the copyright to their own notes.

Some university officials say faculty members have the right to protect their professional reputation ? they don?t want inaccurate or low-quality notes to be attributed to them. But others say the university policies are restricting students? free speech.

?Given the amount of money students are paying to go to school right now, to ? confront them with these policies and say, ?You don?t even have the right to use your own notes any way you want,? seems to be the wrong message to be sending,? said Jason M. Schultz, assistant clinical professor of law at UC Berkeley and director of the university?s Samuelson Law, Technology & Public Policy Clinic.

The CSU and UC systems have made efforts to shut down private note-selling websites for some time. As early as 1999, the note-selling website Versity.com sparked officials? furorat UC Berkeley. In fall 2010, CSU sent a cease-and-desist order to NoteUtopia, which allows students to upload course notes, study guides and outlines to a website, then set a price and earn cash for their work.

More recently, both UC and CSU have sent cease-and-desist letters to Notehall, a note-selling website owned by Santa Clara-based Chegg.

CSU sent its letterto Chegg in January after at least one student was reported to student judicial affairs for selling notes through the service. CSU Chico?s student newspaper, The Orion, reported that two students were referred to judicial affairs, but Lisa Root, the university?s director of student judicial affairs, said there has been only one case involving the note-selling policy in the past three years. She could not comment on the specific case. The one student named in the Orion story declined to talk to a reporter Wednesday.

It?s unclear whether the student was sanctioned or whether other universities in California have sought disciplinary action against students who have sold their notes to third parties.

The letter from CSU to Chegg cited CSU?s own student policies and the California Education Code, both of which prohibit selling, distributing or publishing class notes for a commercial purpose.

Notehall?s website indicates the company is no longer accepting notes from CSU or UC students. Users who try to upload notes for CSU or UC campuses see an error message.

Dying for Chocolate: George Washington's Favorite Drink: Chocolate

President's Weekend and what better way to celebrate than with the George Washington's Favorite Drink: Warm Chocolate Cream.

George Washington definitely liked his chocolate. A favorite breakfast for him was cornmeal hoe cakes with honey and butter, washed them down with Warm Chocolate Cream, according to a new cookbook, Dining with the Washingtons, by the staff at George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate. The cookbook offers updated versions of typical recipes from the period and a glimpse into the first president's favorite foods.

Dining with the Washingtons, Historic Recipes, Entertaining, and Hospitality from Mount Vernon, edited By Stephen A. McLeod

Chocolate was a favorite drink at Mount Vernon in George Washington's lifetime. Washington's first recorded order for chocolate was for 20 pounds of the product, which arrived from England in 1758. He continued to buy chocolate throughout his life, in quantities as small as one pound and as large as the 50 pounds purchased three months before his death in 1799. (Source: Pleasant Living Magazine)

Chocolate was a typical breakfast beverage, not only at Mount Vernon but throughout British North America. It was made by grating a small amount of chocolate into boiling water, milk and water, or wine and water, and later adding sugar (See recipe below from Dining with the Washingtons).

?In a letter to his wife in Scotland, tutor John Harrower at Belvidera Plantation wrote that breakfast with his employer usually consisted of warm bread and either coffee or chocolate. In 1794, a friend wrote to George Washington requesting two or three bushels of chocolate shells "such as we've frequently drank Chocolate of at Mt. Vernon, as my Wife thinks it agreed with her better than any other Breakfast....". Martha Washington's daughter-in-law admitted to one of her daughters that "the more simple food I have is best" and went on to say that "I breakfast on Chocolate....".

Special ceramic forms were used to serve this beverage. Among the 309 pieces of white and gold French china acquired in 1790 for the presidential mansion were 12 chocolate cups and saucers, which were brought to Mount Vernon upon Washington's retirement. The Washingtons purchased three sets of tea china and six chocolate cups in 1793, further evidence that chocolate, although popular, was not served as often as tea. A covered, two-handled chocolate or caudle cup, probably intended as a display piece, survives from the "States" service given to Martha Washington in 1796 and is exhibited in the museum at Mount Vernon.

In addition to enjoying cocoa, the Washingtons often made a healthful tea from the shells (hulls), which they served to guests.

Meet plants' and algae's common ancestor: Primitive organisms not always so simple, researcher says

ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2012) ? A University of Arkansas biologist has created a sketch of what the first common ancestor of plants and algae may have looked like. He explains that primitive organisms are not always simple.

The image appears as part of a "Perspective" article in the Feb. 17 issue of Science.

Fred Spiegel, professor of biological sciences in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, suggests what microscopic parts would have been present in this common ancestor based on findings by Dana Price of Rutgers University and his colleagues, who examined the genome of a freshwater microscopic algae and determined that it showed that algae and plants are derived from one common ancestor. This ancestor formed from a merger between some protozoan-like host and cyanobacterium, a kind of bacteria that use photosynthesis to make energy, that "moved in" and became the chloroplast of this first alga. Price and his colleagues show that today's algae and plants have to be descended from this first alga, but they give no idea what it looked like.

"The work that Price and his group did nailed down what the relationships are" between this organism, the algae and plants, and all other eukaryotes, organisms that have a true nucleus in their cells, Spiegel said. "Once you know that, you can compare the structure of cells and characteristics you see in algae and plants with other eukaryotes and get a reasonable idea of what the original critter must have looked like."

For many years, scientists have speculated that the original ancestor of plants and algae must have originated from a protozoan-like organism and cyanobacteria. They theorized that at some point in the distant past the cyanobacteria became part of the other organism and created the first alga, which in turn created the opportunity for the growth into the biodiversity found in plants that we see today.

However, other scientists argued that the diversity and complexity of plants and algae suggest multiple events where different organisms merged. They pointed out that some members of the plant kingdom have simple structures and therefore must be more primitive than others.

Price and his colleagues' studied the genome of an obscure alga called Cyanophora. Their results strongly suggest that the first alga arose about a billion to a billion and a half years ago. This alga became the ancestor to the group of algae containing Cyanophora, plus the group of algae that includes the red seaweeds, plus the group that includes the green algae and the land plants. Together, these organisms form the super group called Plantae.

Based on this research, Spiegel has put forth a hypothetical snapshot of what the common ancestor of Plantae, the "first alga," might have looked like.

"The common ancestor of Plantae was an organism with very complex cells and a complex life cycle," Spiegel said. While some members of the super group Plantae may have less complex cells and life cycles, this does not mean they pre-date the common ancestor. "They're simpler because they lost parts, not because they originated that way."

Sam Hunt and Dick Frizzell | Poetry in a new light... | Stuff.co.nz

SARAH CATHERALL

Take one of New Zealand's best-known artists and pair him up with one of our iconic poets and the result is a range of unique artworks that celebrate both their talents.

Since splashing Sam Hunt's poems over canvas, Dick Frizzell is now moved to tears when he reads his new friend's poems, which is an interesting confession for an expressionist pop artist who admits he's never been keen on poetry.

"I avoided it at school. I always thought, 'Poetry, poetry, what the f... is poetry'?," he laughs.

"But I've been converted to Sam's poetry. It's funny, when you spend a lot of time working with them, I can now hardly quote them without choking. They are so profound."

Frizzell's light-filled studio on the edge of the Haumoana shoreline is filled with art and graphic design books rather than literature.

But the Hawke's Bay painter pulls out one book that has consumed many of his hours over the past year ? a complete collection of Hunt's poems. Frizzell has always been restless to produce new works and to challenge himself with new projects, and when The Dominion Post visited his home, the result of that energy graced his studio walls. An exhibition of Frizzell's efforts, Painting the Hunt, has just begun at Paige Blackie Gallery in Wellington.

But Frizzell and Hunt's collaboration only came about by chance. About three years ago, an advertising agency approached the artist about creating a new Kiwi icon for giant billboards similar to Frizzell's famous Four Square man.

That idea didn't take off, until one of the creatives came up with the idea of Frizzell painting a Hunt poem. Frizzell was also keen to capture the Kiwi spirit, rather than an image.

Frizzell took Hunt's work, Wave Song, and put others on big canvases, sending the images off to the poet.

"He was ecstatic," recalls Frizzell. "He said, `Dick, this is how my poems are supposed to look'."

By this time, Frizzell recalls that Hunt's poems were starting to have an impact on him. He found poems that he was personally drawn to, and Hunt would explain the meaning behind each.

Says the poet: "The page is just a store of the poem. When someone else comes along and puts the poem out there in a different way, it makes you see the poem again. For me, seeing the poem on canvas is like literally seeing the poem in a new light."

It's not the first time that Hunt's poems have been transformed into another genre. He regularly collaborates with the guitarist/singer, David Kilgour, who has turned his poems into songs for the album, Falling Debris. Hunt, a performance poet, has also worked with country and western band The Warratahs, modern classical musician Gareth Farr, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

New Zealand has long had a tradition of celebrating text in art ? the legendary Colin McCahon is best known for it and Ralph Hotere has also incorporated text. Frizzell, a graphic designer by trade, has been well known for turning iconic signs into art. In his Haumoana studio, he has huge reference files of signage that have inspired art like his fruit and vegetable signs, and books too.

"I've always been fascinated by the lettering form and by pop art."

Hunt is hundreds of kilometres north, on the Kaipara Harbour, on Northland's west coast, where he's currently working on another book of poems spanning his lifetime. While he has only met Frizzell twice ? at the launch of their first exhibition in Auckland last year, and again in Wellington at the Page Blackie launch last week ? he has been a fan of the artist's work.

When Hunt's adult son, Tom, was young, they regularly devoured a book that Frizzell had illustrated, The Magpies, which was written by Denis Glover.

"Dick has sent a copy to my grandson, Loki," says Hunt. "I've always known a lot of his art over the years."

The rest of the time the pair communicate online, Frizzell eagerly awaiting the arrival of Hunt's emails which read like poetry, and are even presented like poems.

"What we do both have in common," says Frizzell, "is that we both inhabit this peculiar space. We've both committed the ultimate sin of being understood."
