14-inch Razer Blade gaming laptop review: smaller, faster, lighter

14inch Razer Blade gaming laptop review smaller, faster, lighter

Most companies refresh their products on an annual basis, carefully timing development and release schedules to match consumer demand, product obsolescence and component upgrades. It's the norm, an expected pattern that most PC, smartphone and tablet manufacturers follow. Razer, however, completely ignores this cycle, as exemplified by its Blade line of gaming laptops -- already on its third generation in less than two years. This would be less impressive if the firm wasn't a relative newcomer to the game; before it announced the Blade, Razer was known primarily for creating keyboards, gaming mice and console controllers. A fully fledged gaming PC was a jarring departure for the humble peripheral maker.

Even so, here we are: reviewing the third-generation Razer Blade gaming laptop. This, too, is a departure from what we've grown to expect from the company -- a smaller, thinner device bereft of the previous model's signature Switchblade interface. For some PC manufacturers, a 14-inch machine might be just another SKU in the catalog. But for Razer, it's almost a mark of progress: not only is the Blade popular enough to necessitate successive generations, but also multiple form factors. It's also the company's lowest-priced laptop yet, not to mention its first to include Intel's new fourth-generation CPU -- but at $1,800 for the base model, it still isn't cheap. Read on to see if the new Blade has enough charm to be worth its lofty price tag.

Chilly economic climate and weather hit zoos - The Local

Zoos in North Rhine-Westphalia are under intense financial pressure as the cold keeps visitors away and the chill economic climate kills off corporate sponsorship, an investigation by a German regional paper showed this week.

A combination of cold weather and shops opening later on Saturdays is keeping visitors away from zoos in the western German state. And as if that weren't enough, companies are pulling the plug on crucial sponsorship deals too.

"The long winter has badly affected us," Ilona Schapper, deputy director of Dortmund Zoo told the Rheinische Post. "We need a lot of visitors to our zoo for our financial turnover," she said. A lack of people entering through the turnstiles is resulting in a dramatic situation, she added.

This long winter is exacerbating a situation that has been deteriorating for many years. Large companies are becoming more reluctant to pump money into the institutions.

German energy giant RWE recently cut its ?5 million sponsorship of Duisburg Zoo, and Air Berlin, which used to finance the koala house, has also pulled out. The airline formerly brought over the eucalyptus leaves eaten by koalas for breakfast, lunch and dinner, from Florida free of charge.

North Rhine-Westphalia boasts several major zoos within close proximity of each other, as well as a number of smaller aquatic centres. But zoo directors are not keen to address the question of competition directly, "We all offer something different in terms of animals," Schapper said, a sentiment many of her counterparts in the surrounding zoos shared.

But one colleague said "No city, no director, no politician wants to give up their zoo. That's why everyone shies away from the topic."

Almost all zoos are in the hands of local authorities, whose own coffers are far from bulging. "The running costs alone eat you up," said Schapper, stressing that "zoos are open 365 days a year. Staff, electricity, feed: that all costs a lot."

Dwindling finances have put necessary restoration works at Duisburg Zoo on hold. Its monkey house badly needs to be restored, and the restaurant terraces at the main entrance no longer meet fire safety requirements.

The animal population has halved in recent years. Adding to the zoo's woes, the dolphin pen, which had been a major attraction and unique in the region, has now closed.

"The question is no longer if, but rather, when the first zoo will close down because it can no longer be financed" one zoo director told the Rheinische Post on condition of anonymity.

venture into vegan from food for thought with claire thomas

"Vegan," like any lifestyle that seems restrictive to those outside of it, can appear meager or ascetic. For many, the idea of foregoing bacon and cheese is too much (and I am firmly in that camp), however, this doesn't mean that vegan food is intrinsically boring, tasteless, and gruel-like in any way.? To help turn perceptions around, I dedicated an entire episode to awesome food that happens to be vegan.? No tofu, no fillers, no cashew puree or kelp flakes.? None of the ingredients or ideas that seem to scare people away from vegan.? You can have a gorgeous dinner without any animal by product and not miss a thing, so today, I'm highlighting some of my favorite "vegan by accident" recipes. Enjoy!

Roasted Garlic White Bean Dip

2 cups cannelini beans (canned or cooked)

1/2 cup reserved liquid (from cooking or the can)

1 teaspoon rosemary, chopped

1 head, roasted garlic

1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

To roast garlic, cut the top off of the head of garlic, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt.? Wrap in aluminum foil and roast in a 425 F oven for 45 minutes, or until tender and golden brown.

In a food processor, combine the beans, rosemary, roasted garlic, and balsamic until pureed.? To make the texture looser, add a little liquid a little at a time until you've reached your desired consistency. Salt and pepper to taste.?

Roasted Vegetable Pasta?

For 6

1 cup roasted butternut squash (1 inch chop)

1 cup roasted potatoes (yukon gold, 1 in ch chop)

1 cup roasted red onion (1 red onion, sliced into 1/2 inch thick circles)

2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for drizzling

1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved

1 garlic clove, minced

1/2 cup basil, chiffonade

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

8 oz dry pasta

This is meant to be a left overs meal, but if you're roasting your veg from scratch preheat your oven to 425 F.? Start with a cup and a half of each vegetables and rub with a heavy drizzle of olive oil.? Sprinkle with salt and pepper and spread out over a baking sheet (you may need two baking sheets to ensure that the the vegetables aren't touching).? Roast for 25-45 minutes, depending on the vegetable (less time for red onion, more time for potatoes).? Halfway through roasting, flip the vegetables to make sure both sides are cooking evenly.? Once the vegetables are crisp at the edges, remove from the oven.

Meanwhile, cook your pasta in salted boiling water per manufacturer's instructions.? While the pasta cooks, heat up a large saut? pan over medium heat and add the olive oil and then cherry tomatoes.? Let the tomatoes cook for about one minute, and then add the garlic.? Add the roasted vegetables, stirring to combine.? Add the basil and stir. ? When the pasta is done, add it to the? saut? pan straight from the pot with a slotted spoon.? The residual water on the pasta will create a sauce.? Stir and finish with balsamic vinegar and salt and pepper to taste.

Smartphone sales rise 36 percent worldwide

Smartphone sales increase for the fourth quarter is in sharp contrast to the 6 decline in PC shipments. Smartphone sales accounted for 45 percent of mobile phone shipments, a new record.?

By Michael Liedtke,?AP Technology Writer / January 27, 2013

Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Note II is displayed at the showroom of the company's headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, Friday. Samsung was tops in smartphone sales in the fourth quarter, shipping nearly 64 million devices for a 29 percent share of the global market. Apple was No. 2 with nearly 48 million shipments.

The findings from the research firm International Data Corp. are the latest sign of the technology upheaval being wrought by the growing popularity of?smartphones?that can perform a wide variety of tasks, including surfing the Web and taking high-quality photos.

Companies whose fortunes are tied to the PC industry have been particularly hard hit by the shift to?smartphones?and tablet computers.

While some?smartphone?models were in short supply during the holiday season, fourth-quarter PC shipments fell by 6 percent from the previous year, according to another IDC report released earlier this month.

IDC estimates 219 million?smartphones?were shipped during the final three months of last year. That compares with nearly 161 million in the same 2011 period.?Smartphones accounted for about 45 percent of all mobile phone shipments in the fourth quarter, the highest percentage recorded by IDC.

Samsung Electronics Co. retained its bragging rights as the?smartphone sales leader, shipping nearly 64 million devices for a 29 percent share of the global market.

Apple Inc. ranked second with nearly 48 million iPhones shipped during the fourth quarter, translating into a market share of 22 percent.

For all of 2012, IDC estimated nearly 713 million?smartphones?were shipped worldwide, a 44 percent increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, annual PC shipments fell 3 percent from 2011, IDC said. It was the first annual decline since 2001.

Entering 2012, Apple held a slight edge over Samsung in the?smartphone?market. But Samsung sprinted past Apple in smartphone sales during the year as it introduced an array of models, most of which run on Google Inc.'s free Android software. Samsung's top-selling line, the Galaxy, boasts larger display screens than the iPhone and other features.

Apple alleges Samsung's devices illegally ripped off the iPhone's innovations. After a high-profile trial in federal court, a jury in San Jose, Calif. sided with some of the patent infringement claims last August and decided Samsung should pay more than $1 billion in damages. Samsung has been trying to overturn the verdict.

Lower-priced?smartphones?from Samsung and other device makers also have hurt Apple, whose slowing iPhone growth has contributed to a $250 billion decline in its market value since its stock price peaked in late September.

IDC says Huawei Technologies Ltd.'s emphasis on less expensive handsets helped it become the third largest?smartphone?maker with a market share of 5 percent at the end of the fourth quarter.

Fraud concerns linger over new Ill. license law

CHICAGO (AP) ? As Illinois becomes the fourth and most populous state to give illegal immigrants permission to drive, nagging concerns remain about whether there are enough safeguards to avoid the identity fraud and other pitfalls other states faced.

Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn signed Illinois' measure into law Sunday in Chicago. Backers, including Quinn, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and some of the state's top Republicans, tout it as a public-safety measure. They argue that required facial recognition technology is reliable enough to prevent fraud.

They hailed it as an important step for immigrant rights in Illinois, which approved its own Dream Act in 2010 to create a privately-funded scholarship program for immigrant students. President Barack Obama plans to discuss his plan to overhaul the immigration system during a trip to Las Vegas on Tuesday.

"This was a bipartisan effort to pass an important law," Quinn said. "When the president speaks on Tuesday, he can say about his home state of Illinois ... we not only passed the Dream Act last year, we passed driver's licenses for those who are undocumented."

However, the law's opponents have pointed to hundreds of fraudulent cases in New Mexico, Washington and Utah after those states began giving illegal immigrants permission to drive. Illinois will not require applicants to be fingerprinted, for fear that would discourage immigrants from applying.

"How many people would apply for this document knowing that fingerprints will be going to (federal authorities)? Probably not all that many," said Fred Tsao, policy director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, a driving-force behind the measure.

Proponents say it will allow an estimated 250,000 people unlawfully residing in the state to apply for a three-year temporary driver's license and require them to get training and insurance. The Illinois secretary of state's office said the licenses will be available starting in November.

Those ready for the change include 45-year-old Victoria Chavez.

"I need to get my driver's license because I have two kids," the Chicago woman said. "They need my support. This is a victory for all of us in the immigrant community."

The licenses will be like those already issued to certain foreign-born, legal visitors. Applicants will be photographed, and their photo will be entered into the state's facial recognition database ? like the rest of Illinois' licensed drivers? to verify their identity.

But other states' driving programs for illegal immigrants have been abused. New Mexico and Washington both issue licenses, while Utah issues a permit.

An Associated Press investigation last year found a striking pattern in New Mexico, suggesting immigrants tried to game the system to obtain a license. In one instance, 48 foreign-born individuals claimed to live at a smoke shop in Albuquerque to fulfill a residency condition.

Authorities also busted a fraud ring last year that forged documents for illegal immigrants to use after driving from as far as Illinois and North Carolina to obtain a New Mexico license. Republican Gov. Susana Martinez has vowed for years to repeal the decade-old measure, but the Legislature has rejected such efforts.

Washington's requirements attracted national attention when Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, revealed his illegal immigration status in an essay for the New York Times Magazine in 2011. Vargas chronicled how he obtained his Washington license. State authorities conducted an investigation that revealed Vargas did not reside at the address he stated in his application and canceled his license.

Utah's permit is not valid for identification. Illinois' law follows suit.

Utah's Republican-controlled Legislature amended the state's law in 2011 to require illegal immigrants to be fingerprinted, and mandates that the state notify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement if an applicant's fingerprint check yields a felony on record. If the applicant has a misdemeanor warrant outstanding, the state must notify the agency that is seeking the person's arrest.

That kind of information-sharing between state and immigration authorities worries Illinois' immigrant-rights advocates, such as Tsao, who pushed for the legislation without a fingerprinting requirement. They say fingerprinting could deter potential licensees from applying for fear of being identified and deported.

Local law enforcement officials argue in favor of fingerprinting.

"We could see if they have committed a crime; it could be a crime in another state or it could be a crime in their home country," said John Kennedy, executive director of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.

The Illinois secretary of state's office says its facial recognition database is highly sophisticated and accurate. The program uses an algorithm to match more than a dozen facial features that are not easy to alter, such as eye sockets and sides of the mouth.

"The integrity of our driver's license system is a priority," said Henry Haupt, a spokesman for the office.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Edward Acevedo, a Chicago Democrat, said state roads will be safer because illegal immigrants will receive training and be tested before obtaining a license. They also will be required to purchase insurance, Acevedo said.

Tsao's organization estimates uninsured illegal immigrant drivers cause $64 million in damage claims each year, an expense currently covered by increased premiums.

Skin, soft tissue infections succumb to blue light

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Blue light can selectively eradicate Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections of the skin and soft tissues, while preserving the outermost layer of skin, according to a proof-of-principle study led by Michael R. Hamblin of the Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Harvard Medical School, Boston.

The research is published online ahead of print in the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

"Blue light is a potential non-toxic, non-antibiotic approach for treating skin and soft tissue infections, especially those caused by antibiotic resistant pathogens," says Hamblin.

In the study, animal models were infected with P. aeruginosa. All of the animals in the group treated with blue light survived, while in the control, 82 percent (9 out of 11) of the animals died.

Skin and soft tissue infections are the second most common bacterial infections encountered in clinical practice, and represent the most common infection presentation -- more than 3 percent -- in patients visiting emergency departments, says Hamblin. The prevalence of skin and soft tissue infections among hospitalized patients is 10 percent, with approximately 14.2 million ambulatory care visits every year and an annual associated medical cost of almost $24 billion (equivalent to $76 for every American), says Hamblin.

Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections has been significantly complicated by the explosion of antibiotic resistance, which may bring an end to what medical scientists refer to as the antibiotic era, says Hamblin. "Microbes replicate very rapidly, and a mutation that helps a microbe survive in the presence of an antibiotic drug will quickly predominate throughout the microbial population. Recently, a dangerous new enzyme, NDM-1, that makes some bacteria resistant to almost all antibiotics available has been found in the United States. Many physicians are concerned that several infections soon may be untreatable."

Besides harming public health, antibiotic resistance boosts health care costs. "Treating resistant skin and soft tissue infections often requires the use of more expensive, or more toxic drugs, and can result in longer hospital stays for infected patients," says Hamblin.

How would you change the Toshiba Excite 7.7?

How would you change the Toshiba Excite 77

Toshiba's Excite 7.7 was an Android tablet designed to go head-to-head with Samsung's Galaxy Tab 7.7. When we were handed one to review, we fell in love with its 1,280 x 800 Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1.3GHz Tegra 3 chipset and a battery life of over 10 hours. It failed, however, as so many do, with its poor cameras, choppy audio performance and a top-heavy launch price that would put off many buyers. But now, time has passed, the price has fallen and plenty of you might have made the investment. So it's to you that we ask, how's it going? Why not tell us what, if someone asked you, would you change?

You need to be interested in employing Online marketing if you are sincere about your business venture. Do not doubt the truth of this statement. Your company could rise or fall based solely on your whether you have implemented a sound Internet promotion strategy. The following tips can ensure that you get the most out of the efforts you devote to Internet marketing.

One way to become an authority or subject-matter expert is to compile a relevant glossary on your website. This is a great tool for both current and prospective customers. People doing a search for those terms will be more likely to come to your website. You will get more traffic and be considered a reference.

Minimize the use of tools like Flash or AJAX. It may be aesthetically pleasing, but it will not add additional search engine results. If you want to employ Flash, use it sparingly and make sure you have plenty of other keywords and navigational tools available.

TIP! Figuring out your niche for your business is key to market on the Internet. Since there are no geographical constraints, you could easily reach out to a very small target audience.

It?s important not to become too reliant on one venue or source of income when engaged in Internet promotion. This is key when because income will vary in the beginning and may not be sufficient at first until you are more established. Keep your primary job until you are absolutely certain it is safe for you to give it up.

Keep in mind what your audience will be expecting when they come to your site. If you can figure out what they want, you will get more sales. Ask people you trust for opinions on your website. You can even ask some of your online friends to check it out or ask for feedback from forum members. Really research what would make an excellent site that delivers to your target market.

Deal with complaints personally. You should strive to handle all customer complaints yourself as this way you know when they have been resolved. Always respond to complaint emails yourself and with a solution to that complaint.

TIP! Make sure your customers know they can opt out of receiving email from you at any time. This is essential to today?s online world of unwanted opinions and spam.

Make sure that you implement all sorts of different software to make your Affiliate marketing strategy as successful as possible. If your customers use more advanced software than you do, they will wonder why you haven?t upgraded. On the other hand, if you demonstrate a willingness to take risks and employ cutting-edge business tactics, customers will respect your innovative practices.

Do some research to find out which types of Internet marketing are working for your competitors. For example, you may find that some of the best ways to go about marketing your site won?t cost you a single penny. But unless you?re first taking the time to really think about it, you may end up paying money for nothing. There are many ways to get people to come to your site. It just requires a little creativity.

Every image that appears on your website should have its own caption. Search engines use captions to help determine if a site is relevant to a user?s search. With good captions on your images, your site can raise in search engine rankings.

TIP! Long before site ranking becomes a concern for you, you need to build yourself an outstanding website. Creating a well-designed website is an essential first step for your business.

Do not use spam. Web crawlers, which quickly post hundreds or thousands of comments in a short amount of time, rarely produce the desired effect for your business. As a matter of fact if you are generic with advertising potential customers may be driven off.

Within businesses, those who are authoritative in their fields are widely respected. Don?t be afraid to let it be known that you are indeed the head honcho. You can refer to yourself as the ?President? or ?CEO? of your company.

Marketing your business wisely on the Internet is no longer an option but a requirement. It cannot be avoided or ignored by anyone who does business online. By following these steps you can ensure that you have every opportunity for your business to succeed.

TIP! You should be very careful about the information you are giving customers when you are marketing a small business. Do your best to write original and relevant content.

A look at notable deadly nightclub fires

A fire that swept through a crowded nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday and killed at least 245 people appears to be the deadliest in more a decade. Here is a look at some of the biggest nightclub fires in the past century:

? A blaze at the Lame Horse nightclub in Perm, Russia, broke out in December 2009, when an indoor fireworks display ignited a plastic ceiling decorated with branches, killing 152.

? A December 2004 fire killed 194 people at an overcrowded working-class nightclub in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after a flare ignited ceiling foam.

? A nightclub fire in the U.S. state of Rhode Island in 2003 killed 100 people after pyrotechnics used as a stage prop by the 1980s rock band Great White set ablaze cheap soundproofing foam on the walls and ceiling.

Israel warns of attack on Syrian chemical weapons

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel could launch a pre-emptive strike to stop Syria's chemical weapons from reaching Lebanon's Hezbollah or al-Qaida inspired groups, officials said Sunday,

The warning came as the military moved a rocket defense system to a main northern city, and Israel's premier warned of dangers from both Syria and Iran.

Israel has long expressed concerns that Syrian President Bashar Assad, clinging to power during a 22-month civil war, could lose control over his chemical weapons.

Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom said Sunday that Israel's top security officials held a special meeting last week to discuss Syria's chemical weapons arsenal. The fact of the meeting, held the morning after a national election, had not been made public before.

Shalom told the Army Radio station that the transfer of weapons to violent groups, particularly the Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah, would be a game changer.

"It would be crossing a line that would demand a different approach, including even action," he said. Asked whether this might mean a pre-emptive attack, he said: "We will have to make the decisions."

Israel has kept out of the civil war that has engulfed Syria and killed more than 60,000 people, but it is concerned that violence could spill over from its northern border into Israel.

Israel deployed its Iron Dome rocket defense system in the northern city of Haifa on Sunday. The city was battered by Hezbollah rocket fire during a war in the summer of 2006. The military called the deployment "routine."

Iron Dome, an Israel-developed system that shoots down incoming short-range rockets, was used to defend Israeli cities during a round of hostilities with Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, on Israel's southern flank, last November.

Yisrael Hasson, a lawmaker and former deputy head of Israel's Shin Bet intelligence agency, said Israel was closely following developments in Syria to make sure chemical weapons don't "fall into the wrong hands."

"Syria has a massive amount of chemical weapons, and if they fall into hands even more extreme than Syria like Hezbollah or global jihad groups it would completely transform the map of threats," Hasson told Army Radio.

"Global jihad" is the term Israel uses for forces influenced by al-Qaida. Syria's rebels include al-Qaida-allied groups.

Syria has rarely acknowledged possessing chemical weapons.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to threats from Syria and Iran at a Cabinet meeting Sunday. Iran is Syria's main regional ally.

"We must look around us, at what is happening in Iran and its proxies and at what is happening in other areas, with the deadly weapons in Syria, which is increasingly coming apart," he said.

Israel views Iran as an existential threat because of its nuclear and missile programs and support for violent anti-Israeli groups in Lebanon and Gaza, as well as repeated references by Iranian leaders to Israel's destruction. Iran denies it is seeking to build atomic weapons, insisting its nuclear program is for civilian purposes.

On Friday, Israeli Channel 2 TV broadcast an interview with a former Iranian diplomat who defected to the West in 2010. He warned that if Tehran gets nuclear weapons, it would use them against Israel. He did not provide evidence.

Part of Mohammad Reza Heydari's job was to draft foreign scientists to work on Tehran's nuclear program and he brought many from North Korea into Iran, the report said.

Heydari spoke from Oslo, where he has received political asylum.

Samsung Galaxy Note III will most likely feature the Exynos 5 SoC

We've already heard the rumors that the Galaxy Note III will sport a gigantic 6.3-inch screen, but it seems even more probable that the hybrid-handset will sport the brand new eight-core, Samsung-manufactured Exynos 5 SoC. The Korea Times reports just that, saying the Samsung Galaxy Note III will arrive later this year with the octo-core processor according to executives from the company.

The Exynos 5 Octa is an eight core processor designed for tablets and high-end smartphones. It's one of the first products to use ARM's big.LITTLE processor switching technology and can designate the task at hand to either the high-performance or high-efficiency?CPU cores. This should make the processor more power-efficient than its predecessors; it also means a faster phone with sufficient battery life.

This comes hot off the heels of news that Samsung is also minimizing its reliance on Apple's business by expanding its chip business in China and looking toward other smartphone manufacturers, like ZTE and Huawei. Apple currently pays Samsung about $8.8 billion to produce mobile chips, according to Goldman Sachs. Samsung hopes the introduction of the Exynos 5 Octa will help give the company more appeal so that it might diversify its client base and begin shifting its revenue streams away from Apple. "More smartphone releases by Chinese makers are giving a new business chance for us to offset risks stemming from Apple," said the unnamed Samsung executive. With Huawei's 6.1-inch smartphone in the works, Samsung is hopeful the company will need its chips to efficiently power that display without killing off battery life. And if that processor will be tucked inside Huawei's phones, it's almost inevitable that it'd come standard with Samsung's next generation of phablets too.

Goldman Sachs' net surges on investment banking

NEW YORK (AP) ? Goldman Sachs went some way to restoring its reputation as a Wall Street powerhouse after its earnings almost tripled in the fourth quarter, handily beating analysts' estimates, as investment banking revenues surged.

The investment bank earned $2.83 billion after paying preferred dividends, compared with $978 million a year earlier in the period ending Dec. 31, 2012.

The bank's debt underwriting business profited from a rally in bonds and a surge in demand for debt securities. Goldman's debt underwriting business earned $1.96 billion in revenues for the year, its second-best annual performance and the highest since 2007. An increase in stock underwriting also helped boost revenues.

"The fourth quarter reminds us a little of the old days and should give investors confidence in Goldman's future earnings power," Glenn Schorr, an analyst at Nomura, wrote in note to clients.

Goldman's stock jumped $3.84 to $139.40. The stock has returned 43 percent in the past 12 months.

Analysts were encouraged that revenue growth of 53 percent for the year outpaced a small increase in employee compensation, helping the bank boost its profit margins. Paying employees is Goldman's biggest single cost, accounting for more than half of its total operating expenses.

The bank's employee compensation costs rose 6 percent to $12.94 billion for 2012. The bank also reduced its headcount by 3 percent to 32,400. That means that the average employee at the bank earns almost $400,000 a year.

"While economic conditions remained challenging for much of the last year, the strengths of our business model and client franchise, coupled with our focus on disciplined management, delivered solid performance for our shareholders," Goldman's CEO Lloyd Blankfein said in a statement Wednesday.

Goldman differs from other big U.S. banks because it deals almost exclusively with institutions, rather than consumers. Its clients are usually mutual funds, international corporations, other banks and similar firms.

Revenue for the fourth quarter rose to $9.24 billion, 53 percent higher than in the same period a year ago, beating analysts' estimates of $7.97 billion.

Goldman earned $5.60 on a per-share basis, compared with the average analysts forecast of $3.71, according to data provider FactSet.

London backs off arctic oil ban

Published: Jan. 15, 2013 at 9:24 AM

LONDON, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- A British leader of an environmental committee said a refusal to back a moratorium on arctic drilling shouldn't be seen as "a starting gun" for explorers.

London rejected a September recommendation from the Environmental Audit Committee to place a ban on arctic drilling. The committee last year said there should be an immediate ban until explorers can prove their incident response plans work in extreme conditions and a pan-arctic spill response plan is enacted.

An exploration campaign approved by the U.S. government for Shell in the northern arctic waters offshore Alaska is under review following the late December grounding of drill ship Kulluk. Shell's efforts last year were complicated by weather and equipment errors.

London, however, rejected calls for a ban despite Shell's track record so far in arctic waters. In justifying its decision, the government said it lacks the expertise to dictate trends to arctic states.

Joan Walley, the British lawmaker who chairs the audit committee, said in a statement that last year's record-setting ice melt in the arctic region should add to the concerns that have emerged since Shell's complications.

"Last summer's record arctic sea ice melt should be seen as a wake-up call to Governments to work together to protect this region, not a starting gun on a race to exploit its resources," she said in a statement. "The U.K. should take a lead in pushing for a protected area in the arctic -- one of the last undeveloped wilderness areas on Earth."

Beats CEO Jimmy Iovine pointed Steve Jobs to music subscription service

News

Beats Audio CEO Jimmy Iovine has revealed that he tried to convince late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs to launch a music subscription service.

In an?interview?with All Things D at CES on Friday, Iovine explained that he tried to push Jobs into introducing a subscription service like Spotify in the early 2000s, when he was working as head of record label Interscope Geffen, a subsidiary of major label Universal Music Group.

?We hit it off right away,? said Iovine. ?We were really close. We did some great marketing stuff together: 50 Cent, Bono, Jagger, stuff for the iPod ? we did a lot of stuff together. But I was always trying to push Steve into subscription. And he wasn?t keen on it right away.?

Iovine and Beats co-founder Luke Wood spent about three years trying to convince Steve that a music subscription service was a good idea. ?He was there, not there? he didn?t want to pay the record companies enough. He felt that they would come down, eventually.?

?I don?t know what [Apple media chief] Eddy Cue would say ? I?m seeing him soon,? Iovine revealed, hinting that Apple could still be interested in launching such a service. ?But I think in the end Steve was feeling it, but the economics? he wanted to pay the labels [for subscriptions], but [the fees were] not going to be acceptable to them.?

Iovine is working with Beats on a subscription service called ?Project Daisy?, which he thinks can become more popular than Spotify and other big competitors.

When asked why making headphones is good practice for getting into music subscriptions, Iovine said: ?Steve called me in once. He said, ?You know something, you should feel really good. You?re the only guys from software that ever build a piece of hardware successfully.? That means that we can be the guys who cracked this code as well.?

?Because we live in both worlds,? he explained. ?We?re actually arguably better at this than at hardware. You know why they call it hardware? It?s really hard.?

Earlier this month, BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield predicted that?Apple will launch an ?iRadio??music subscription service this year, and that the company is in negotiations with music labels to gain access to song catalogues.

Greenfield highlighted the?addition of a new dedicated Radio button?in?iTunes 11, which he claims also indicates that Apple is planning to introduce a new service soon.

HBT: Nationals sign Rafael Soriano to two-year deal

Well, this certainly came out of nowhere.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that free agent reliever Rafael Soriano has agreed to a two-year, $28 million contract with the Nationals, who lose their first-round draft pick in order to sign him.

Soriano was one of three remaining free agents with draft pick compensation attached. All three of them (Soriano, Kyle Lohse, Michael Bourn) are represented by agent Scott Boras and there?s been all sorts of speculation that they?d struggle to secure multi-year deals, but Soriano at least has found a nice landing spot with a Nationals team that is flush with high-profile Boras clients.

Washington?s bullpen wasn?t exactly hurting, so it?ll be interesting to see how Soriano fits in with a group that already included Drew Storen and Tyler Clippard as the late-inning duo. According to Passan the two-year, $28 million deal also includes a $14 million option for 2015 that vests if Soriano has 120 games finished in 2013-2014, which would essentially require his being the Nationals? full-time closer.

Soriano stepped in as the Yankees? closer when Mariano Rivera injured his knee last season and saved 42 games with a 2.26 ERA. He?s battled injuries over the years, but when healthy Soriano has consistently been one of the best relievers in baseball with a 2.78 career ERA and 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings. He?s posted an ERA of 3.00 or lower in six of the past seven seasons, but $14 million per year and a draft pick is an awfully big price tag for a reliever.

Twist on Turkey's treatment of multiple sclerosis | Health and Fitness

What if these chemicals orders were short-circuited? Team-tryptophan products used Platten is that in mice with an MS-like condition. Tests on miceUntil now, scientists have tested an artificial version of the molecule in mice with an MS-like condition. The strategy they tried reversed the paralysis caused by the disease in mice, the researchers write in Science.

The researchers included Michael Platten, MD, now the Department of Neurology, University of Tubingen in Germany, and Lawrence Steinman, MD, of Stanford University. Clue up

T cells are activated by a series of chemical messengers. Image of an attack dog waiting for his kennel up to several layers of staff to sign for its release.

The dirty work is done by ?T cells, the? killer cells of the immune system.

In particular, they studied compounds released when tryptophan is broken down.

Under normal conditions, exist in a resting state, quietly but constantly monitor their environment to reveal indications of microbial invasion or tissue damage..

In another test, the rats were ?fewer disease relapses? after eating food experiments, the researchers write.

The immune system has had to defend the body against things that do not belong to us . But in September, the immune system attacks the body itself. That?s because MS is a disease called ?autoimmune?.

A compound found in Turkey, may one day help treat multiple sclerosis , new research shows.

In the body, tryptophan has several jobs. It helps make serotonin , and vitamin B. It is perhaps better known by the public to make some people feel sleepy after eating turkey.

Platten experiment focused on how the by-products of tryptophan affect the immune system. Quiet killer cells

This does not mean that your Thanksgiving dinner can cure or prevent multiple sclerosis. But the discovery could ultimately encourage the development of new MS and other diseases.

War of Exailiah

Okay guys. I'm looking to re-create and RP I had been in once but had to close due to time constraints and being spread too thin over a few RPs and now I want to just focus on making this one great!

The blades flashed in the gleaming sun. Both swords swinging down with the power of the warrior behind them. The right sword with much more force, but the left still terribly strong. The clang made by the swords hitting the shield was deafening. The exiled soldier turned his spell on one of his escorts. The mans hands began to burn, and blister, and pus. He dropped both his swords onto the ground, screaming a blood curdling scream that seemed to echo across the forest.

-A moment of silence-

The second guard gets one dagger in the exiled soldiers leg, but takes a shield bash to the face, knocking out his left canine tooth. A ball of fire hits him square in the chest sending him back and to the ground. He recovers quickly as his Fight or Flight system takes control of his body. The exiled has paused, only momentarily, to cast a devastating spell. The warrior grabs a small knife from his boot and gives it a throw. The clouds above him darken, begin to swirl, and roar, but as the knife hits the exiled's throat and he falls to the ground limp, they begin to dissipate. The sky quickly returns to normal.

He checks both bodies, neither able to be saved, and sadly returns to his hometown, Har'laar, to inform his general about the news.

War is about to start and there is no telling who might win.

Welcome to, Kazah!

All is fair in love, AND WAR!

During the revolution of the land of Kazah, war started. Well, actually, it flashed. Let us go back about 100 years.

Kazah has three main regions. Har'laar, the land of the warriors. Here the warriors are strong as oxen, or stronger, swift with the blade, and smart as the gravel. They are tactically smart, but instead of school they attend gladiator like training from a young age. Here the women have the advantage of speed and flexibility, as well as more training with their feet. The typical dress for such a person is a chest plate (Except female archers, who wear just a tightly wrapped cloth from clavicle down to navel), and a Roman-esque "skirt" with light armor on it, as well as boots that lace up with leather up to the bottom of the calf. This is true for both sexes, molded appropriately for maximum function.

Also in Kazah is Shmiir-tah. The land of mages. Here the mages are smarter than the tree of life they fight to the death to protect, wiser than the sages, more destructive than the worst hurricane, and more fragile than heated butter. From the day they can comprehend words parents begin training their kids in the school of thought. Magic here is usually one dimensional, or people usually learn one discipline (chosen by their parents) and master it. The people who "transcend" and become senators, kings, or librarians can then have the mental capacity to learn another discipline. Here the sexes are equal, only individuals can surpass eachother, not genders. Here are generally worn robes that reference their magic (Green for nature, red fire, blue ice/water, white celestial etc etc) with a complementing tie string, wooden sandals, and very light leather armor underneath.

The final region of Kazah is Exailiah. The land of the exiled. Here warriors who dabbled in magic, refused the blade, or who were, Gods forbid, born with an average intelligence are sent. Mages who take up a weapon, grow to have too much muscle, or who aren't intelligent enough are sent. But, neither Shmiir-tah or Har'laar are inhabited by outwardly cruel people. They wait until the 16th birthday to see if a change occurs. If not they escort the children, usually but elders can be exiled as well, to the city, and set up a homestead for them. They regret doing this, but it is tradition.

Now, ah, yes, back to the war.

Anyway, The war had been boiling since an unusual number of people have been being exiled. Elder Exiled members have been spreading propaganda in both cities. Telling the inhabitants of Shmiir-tah that warriors have been enticing their women to lower their peoples intelligence over the generation and defeat and imprison them. They have also been telling the Har'laar that mages have been cursing their children with intelligence and weakness so that they can eventually gain higher population for all out war.

Truth be told, neither side has war on their To Do list. They are always cautious of the other, but maintain peace and trade with one another. However they both have plans for if revolt should happen, because once exile became the only option, they had to be able to defend themselves. With Shmiir-tah and Har'laar both having been deep set in their traditions they had no choice to do this or suffer the wrath of their Gods.

Now is the time for revolt. Those sent to Exailiah feel they are being punished for their individuality. They don't believe it is fair. They don't want bloodshed, but feel it is the only way. Mages and warriors put aside their differences to defend their beloved Kazah, while those who have been mistreated fight for their rights.

Whose side will you join?

The warriors with brute force, the mages with destructive and protective magics,
or the exiled, either combinations or superior/inferiors of their own kind.

Love.
War.
Peace.

How will this end?

So before I re-open this RP I need at least 3 mages, 3 warriors and 5 exiled. NPCs can be created and played by anyone within reason and I will be playing the higher ups of the cities.

Feel free to PM me with any questions, and I am also looking for a Co-GM!

Tell your friends and create your characters!

My girlfriend is currently studying a semester abroad - she is in spain. We have agreed to keep the long distance relationship - skyline occasionally and texting a bit every day (at some point there is only so much you can say over text). As one might expect, she is meeting a lot of new people.

About a week after going there I see this guy in a picture with her. In group pictures, he always seems to have part of his body leaning on her - sometimes his head. Now, these didn't really? bother me at all.? A couple days later, she puts a profile picture up of her and him. My gut instinct is that nothing has happened between the two but rather? she just wanted to see how I would react. I didn't say anything because in all honesty it never really crossed my mind. It's just a stupid profile picture - I have tons I pictures with other girls and so on.?

Anyways, three-4 days later, the picture isn't changed but deleted completely.? To me, this is the more shockin than anything else. Since it was her default pic. It was pretty noticeable that it had suddenly been deleted. What do you guys think? Trying to get a reaction out of me and failed? Trying to hide something?

I'd rather avoid a needless confrontation if you guys believe my thoughts to be unwarranted.

Long distance, ugh, rough.

It seems like if it's gonna work out, you ought to be able to talk to her about it, about any thing. But then again maybe this is something you don't wanna know? I wouldn't confront her like "Who the hell was that dude in your profile pic?!?" but if you have to bring it up maybe something casual like "Hey what happened to that pic of you and your friend whatshisname?, that was a good pic..."? ? You either trust her or you don't, and you ought to keep in touch with her by talking to her- not by facebook stalking and reading into every picture she puts up.

I just returned from my study abroad trip.? I was gone for several months, but maintained my LDR with my boyfriend.? Here's the thing about studying abroad.? Your girlfriend is going to meet lots of people and make lots of friends.? Try to be happy for her and support her in her experiences.? Establish some way to effectively communicate your feelings to each other because it will be a pretty rough ride.? But if she is maintaining a LDR while abroad, then you obviously are very important to her.? It's too much work to try to maintain a LDR if this wasn't the case.

So trust your girlfriend, and try not to put too much thought into a facebook picture.? But if you're concerned, ask her about this guy.? Don't "play up her ego." Just ask her, with genuine curiosity, about her experience there.

? It's too much work to try to maintain a LDR if this wasn't the case.

? Don't "play up her ego."

I don't agree. i appreciate the female 2 cents, but no.
she may just be very non-confrontational and would rather not have to deal w/"manning up" and breaking up, but would want the facebooking to do it for her.?
however, the pic could have given the other guy the wrong idea and so she had to take it down to stop him from trying to get in her panties.
i agree you should take lynnch's approach.
make it no big deal, play up her ego, and let her feel like she can tell you everything.

I always get concerned when there are females willing to put up a picture in order to "test their man" or "make him jealous"

That mindset is a relationship killer.

Sounds like something's up, man. The only thing you can do is ask her about it. Do it over skype, not by texting.

shes banging a spaniard, do her a favor and let her go so she can have the time of her life without feeling guilty.

tell her to hit ya up when she gets back and if so chooses, get back with her.

Yeah I'm at a mix between everything that's been said here. Largely because I do not read into every Facebook post/photo because as I have stated before - I think Facebook is stupid. and, in coordination with what has been said here - it only results in speculation.

The relationship has had moments where we reaffirmed are trust - but never "ISSUES" of trust. I have been very supportive of this trip, explaining that I want her close but indeed want her to embark on this great experience. She is not one to cheat and I have found it pointless AND WASTEFUL to say have fun and talk to me when you get back and see if we can work something out. Anyways, I'm gonna ask her today. She tells me pretty frequently about her new encounters so I wanted to see if anything came out on its own.

Like some of you have suggested, I am trying to let her enjoy herself - not have her staring down at a screen all day. That just makes the girl more sad - common sense in a LDR. I am waiting for a nice time to ask her - we Skype every few days but its normally been late for her. She goes out drinks and likes to come back and talk to me from like 4-6 am her time occasionally. In the event that this did spiral down int a more grand ordeal, I'd rather she be completely sober. Moreover, the last thing you tell a Girl is OK I have something to ask you but I'm not going to now. A chain of events like so will certainly lead her down a path to temporary insanity (damn you female thought processing)
