Lycans
All lycans are allergic to silver. When it comes into contact with their skin, it causes a painful rash. If the silver gets into their bloodstream, no matter how little the amount of silver or how small the contact, it will poison the bloodstream. Eventually, the poisoned blood travels to the heart, and the lycans die a painful death.
Lycans are bigger than normal animals. They can transform at any time, although the transformation is inevitable during a full moon. Lycans heal quickly, but it depends on the extent of the damage. If the damage is too great (i.e. an explosion), there is no way to repair it. Lycans do not die natural deaths. Lycans' minds, when in human form, can shift along the scale to being more animal.

While lycans are in human form, they can still use their animal senses and instincts.
Vampires
The only things that hold vampires back are sunlight (it burns them), holy water (it burns their skin like acid), protective magic, and anything associated with Christianity (i.e. stakes, crossses). Vampires do feel pain, but they can usually walk out of it alive. To die, vampires have to be staked through the heart. They have superior strength, and can mess with light particles, which explains their disappearing from view or not showing up on cameras. Most vampires like to bring a human along with them, as a blood source. Like lycans, vampires do not die natural deaths.

Experts propose 'cyber war' on cancer: Universities aim to break cancer's codes for social networking
ScienceDaily (Sep. 4, 2012) ? In the face of mounting evidence that cancer cells communicate, cooperate and even engage in collective decision-making, biophysicists and cancer researchers at Rice University, Tel Aviv University and Johns Hopkins University are suggesting a new strategy for outsmarting cancer through its own social intelligence.
"We need to get beyond the notion that cancer is a random collection of cells running amok," said Herbert Levine, co-director of Rice's Center for Theoretical Biological Physics (CTBP) and co-author of the cover article in this week's Trends in Microbiology that pulls together dozens of recent discoveries about the social behavior of cancer cells. "These cells lead sophisticated social lives."
Article co-author Eshel Ben-Jacob, a senior investigator at CTBP, said, "Cancer is a sophisticated enemy. There's growing evidence that cancer cells use advanced communications to work together to enslave normal cells, create metastases, resist drugs and decoy the body's immune system."
Ben-Jacob, Levine and Donald Coffey, a noted cancer researcher at Johns Hopkins, suggest in the article that cancer researchers act like modern generals and go after their enemy's command, control and communication capabilities. The article is in volume 20, issue 9, pages 403-410 of the journal.
"It's time to declare a cyber war on cancer," said Ben-Jacob, who, along with Coffey, is speaking today at a workshop titled "Failures in Clinical Treatment of Cancer" at Princeton University.
Ben-Jacob said cancer cells have been shown to cooperate to elude chemotherapy drugs, much like bacteria that communicate and act as a team to resist attacks from antibiotics. He said some cancers appear to sense when chemotherapy drugs are present and sound an alarm that causes cells throughout a tumor to switch into a dormant state. Similar signals are later used to sound the "all clear" and reawaken cells inside the tumor.
"If we can break the communication code, we may be able to prevent the cells from going dormant or to reawaken them for a well-timed chemotherapeutic attack," Ben-Jacob said. "This is just one example. Our extensive studies of the social lives of bacteria suggest a number of others, including sending signals that trigger the cancer cells to turn upon themselves and kill one another."
The article cites numerous examples of similarities between the behavior of bacterial colonies and cancerous tumors.
"The parallels between the communal behaviors of bacteria and cancer cells suggest that bacteria can serve as a valuable model system for studying cancer," said Coffey, professor of urology, oncology, pathology and pharmacology and molecular sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "We believe this approach could be particularly valuable for investigating intractable problems like metastasis, relapse and multiple drug resistance."
Levine, Rice's Karl F. Hasselmann Professor in Bioengineering, and fellow CTBP co-director Jos? Onuchic were recruited to Houston last year, thanks in part to a grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) that was designed to spur new thinking about cancer and foster collaborations between CTBP scientists and cancer specialists in the Texas Medical Center.
"This opinion article reflects the multidisciplinary strategy of the CTBP -- to communicate and work together with researchers across disciplines for solving the biomedical challenges of our time," said Onuchic, Rice's Harry C. and Olga K. Wiess Professor of Physics and Astronomy and professor of chemistry.
Ben-Jacob, the Maguy-Glass Chair in Physics of Complex Systems and professor of physics and astronomy at Tel Aviv University, worked previously with Levine and Onuchic on a number of groundbreaking studies about the underlying biophysics of bacterial social behavior. He joined Rice University this summer as senior investigator of the CTBP and adjunct professor of chemistry and cell biology.

The roots of "World Hijab Day" were planted on this day in 2002, marking the day that France banned the wearing of the headscarf in schools. Ten years later, the presence of the veil in public life remains a lighting rod issue, from Europe to the Middle East to Asia.?

The hashtag #worldhijabday or #IHSD ? International Hijab Solidarity Day ? trended on social networking websites worldwide today, used?both by people extolling the virtues of the head covering and supporting a woman?s right to choose to don it and those who question whether it plays a role is oppressing women.?
The issue took center stage in the Middle East this week when Egypt?s state-run television put Fatma Nabil, a woman wearing a simple white veil covering her hair and neck, on camera to read the midday news. It was the first time in Egyptian television?s half-century-long history that a woman wearing the head anchored the news. Even though the vast majority of Egyptian women veil, leaving just the face visible ? and a much smaller minority cover the rest of the face ? successive Egyptian governments tried to present a more secular image in official channels.?
Nabil, who worked in various positions in state television, but always off the air, and then for Misr 25, a satellite station run by the Muslim Brotherhood, said that her on-air return to Egyptian TV marked a ?historic day? and would correct the ?bitter injustice? she?d felt over the issue in the past.
Many in Egypt, men and women included, said the move to have veiled broadcasters reflected Egypt?s reality. Three more will be put on air, said Salah Abdel-Maqsoud, the new information minister.
?I think in a country where upward of 90 percent of the women, according to some estimates, are veiled, it is ludicrous to maintain a policy whereby covering one's hair meant being banned from airtime. This is therefore a reversal of a long-outdated, unfair policy,? says Mohamed El Dahshan, an economist and journalist who co-authored ?The Tahrir Dairies,? a collective memoir of the 18 days of the Egyptian 2011 revolution.
?At the same time, as people have been watching Arab TV channels for a long time now, the sight of a veiled newsreader is neither shocking nor unusual,? he adds. ?This is not a matter of Islam creeping in public life. This is about putting a newsreader who looks like most of her female co-citizens.?
There is still discrimination in other top echelons of Egyptian life, he says. ?In a number of state institutions veiled women have met this glass ceiling. Another major one is the ministry of foreign affairs, a staunchly anti-hijab institution where veiled women would either not be sent on foreign missions at all or restricted to a handful of Islamic countries,? he says.
Though it was never official policy, the upper echelons of government have long preferred to present an image of a modern Egypt, and the headscarf was seen by secularists as something of a throwback, as well as a symbol of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Across the region and further east, news of Nabil?s appointment was taken by supporters as an important step towards acceptance of the Islamic headscarf.
?Absolutely, this is an important development as every person, women in this case, should have the freedom to say or do whatever they wish and have the right to have their voice heard,??a young Pakistani woman named Saba Bawa wrote on World Hijab Day's Facebook page.
World Hijab Day was actually launched by Jamaat-i-Islami, Pakistan?s biggest Islamist group, to ?counter the infidels? conspiracies against the Islamic tenets,? notes?Pakistani blogger Batool Zehra in the country?s Express Tribune. ?But it is not just the feelings of earnest adherents that World Hijab Day has stirred. Sure enough, the liberal socialist brigade has jumped in the fray, starting a hashtag ? ReasonsToPutMenInBurqas.?
?Despite all this," she writes, "World Hijab Day feels strangely authentic, and that might be the most disturbing thing. Free thinking is not what it used to be.??
Marvi Sirmed, a Pakistani columnist, wrote on Twitter that she?d been ?watching interviews of Hijabi women? on TV. Most of those featured, she wrote, said they choose to wear the veil because it makes them ?feel secure."

At the Republican National Convention last week, Ann Romney?s main objective was to ?humanize? her husband, most pundits agreed. Given that Mitt Romney?s low likability ratings are his biggest electoral hurdle, this was seen as a critical task, but not necessarily a difficult one. All Mrs. Romney really needed to do was give voters a warm and fuzzy glimpse of her husband?s character, telling them about his role as a spouse and father, the businessman who worked tirelessly to build a company, the good Samaritan who quietly helped countless others behind the scenes.
Some commentators griped that she could have done more,?but?her delivery was heartfelt and appealing, and the speech may have helped some feel better about Mr. Romney personally, and more drawn to the Romney family.
By contrast, Mrs. Obama has to persuade voters essentially not to fire her husband.?She, too, may tell the public some heartwarming stories about the president ? who, polls show, is far more widely liked on a personal level than Romney. But her primary task will be to defend his policies and sell his vision for the future. And that presents a tricky balancing act.
For one thing, current economic conditions make it hard to claim a record of success without sounding out of touch. Complicating things further is the fact that Americans tend to like their first ladies better when they stay away from politics and policy. Notably, Mrs. Obama was seen as a more polarizing figure during the 2008 campaign (when she made an unfortunate remark about being proud of her country for the first time in her adult life). But since entering the White House, she has been far more disciplined in her public remarks, while championing largely non-controversial issues like childhood obesity ? and her popularity ratings have soared.?
According to The Associated Press, some of the accomplishments Mrs. Obama will specifically highlight in her speech include the equal-pay legislation the president signed into law known as the Lilly Ledbetter Act ? as well as the landmark health-care law. Given the latter?s controversy, Mrs. Obama's challenge there will be to make the case for its benefits without seeming divisive or overly political.
Other first ladies have faced similar challenges. In 2004, Laura Bush said she wanted to ?answer the question that I believe many people would ask me if we sat down for a cup of coffee or ran into each other at the store:?You know him better than anyone, you've seen things no one else has seen, why do you think we should re-elect your husband as president??
Mrs. Bush, whose 2004 convention speech was a departure from her typically non-political persona, went on to defend her husband?s signature education initiative, the No Child Left Behind Act, along with the Bush tax cuts, the Medicare prescription drug benefit, and funding for stem cell research. Nor did she shy away from what was arguably the most controversial decision her husband made in office: invading Iraq.
?I remember an intense weekend at Camp David,? she recounted.??George and Prime Minister Tony Blair were discussing the threat from Saddam Hussein. And I remember sitting in the window of the White House, watching as my husband walked on the lawn below.?I knew he was wrestling with these agonizing decisions that would have such profound consequence for so many lives and for the future of our world.?
It?s hard to know just how pivotal Mrs. Bush?s speech ultimately was. But President Bush got a bump in the polls coming out of the GOP convention ? and from that point on, was able to sustain a lead (barely) all the way to Election Day.
If Mrs. Obama can offer a similarly sympathetic behind-the-scenes perspective on her husband?s most consequential (and controversial) decisions ? without damaging her own popularity in the process ? it could offer a critical boost.
