Answer this: Bob Herbert (Politico)

For nearly 18 years, Bob Herbert held one of the most powerful jobs in journalism. As a columnist for The New York Times, he was a constant and passionate liberal voice on political and social issues. He hung up his hat in March of this year and joined the think tank Demos as a distinguished senior fellow. There, he will focus on economic security issues, in addition to contributing to The American Prospect magazine.

For his sake, we hope life at the think tank will be less grueling for Herbert, now 66, than it was at a daily: He once told his own news organization in an interview that writing a column was ?relentless.?

Herbert may be less stressed these days, but he?s back in the hot seat in the latest installment of POLITICO?s ?Answer This.?

Tell us your favorite joke.

From Steven Wright: I got a new shadow. I had to get rid of the other one. ? It wasn?t doing what I was doing.

When?s the last time you used profanity?

A little while ago. It?s a terrible term that my buddies and I used with pathological frequency in high school, and I haven?t broken the habit yet.

How many hours of sleep do you get (on average)?

Six. I wish I could get by with less. Sleep is so boring.

Describe your level of ambition.

?Ambition? is an odd word for someone who has been as fortunate as I?ve been, both personally (anyone who has ever met my wife would agree) and professionally. I do have one major goal, however: to write a serious play that incorporates as a major theme Faulkner?s famous dictum that the past is not dead; it?s not even past.

You?re president of the United States for enough time to make only one executive decision. What is it?

To embark on a monumental rebuilding of the American infrastructure.

What?s a common and accepted practice for Americans nowadays that you think we?ll look back on with regret?

The widespread willingness to live vicariously through celebrities.

What is your favorite body part (on yourself) and why?

My contact lenses. I?ve been wearing them for so many years they seem like a natural part of my body, and without them I?m blind as a bat.

What would you attempt to do if you knew that you could not fail?

Try out as quarterback for the New York Jets.
