Warm conditions will persist Sunday across the central U.S., while heavy snow moves through the Rockies. A low pressure system and associated cold front that brought heavy rain and heavy mountain snow to the West Coast continues moving eastward and into the Rockies.
This system will extend from the Northern Rockies, through the Central Rockies and Great Basin, and into the Southern Rockies on Sunday. Expect heavy snow to develop in these areas as the system pulls ample moisture onshore from the Pacific Ocean. Snowfall totals will range from 3 to 7 inches in the Northern Rockies, 6 to 9 inches in the Great Basin, and 4 to 8 inches across northern Arizona.
Strong winds will persist along this frontal boundary, with gusts from 40 to 50 mph, up to 65 mph likely at high mountain passes. Light and scattered rain showers and mountain flurries will persist behind this system from the Pacific Northwest and California.
In the Plains, strong air flow from the South continues to push warm and moist air in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will allow for record-breaking high temperatures, with highs ranging in the 70s and 80s across the Midwest and Central Plains. Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop across the Plains and Eastern valleys as this combination of warm, moist air favors thunderstorms. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe with strong winds and large hail.
Temperatures in the lower 48 states ranged Saturday from a morning low of 19 degrees at Cut Bank, Montana, to a high of 87 degrees at Bainbridge, Ga.
