Paul Henderson touched off an unprecedented wave of national pride when he beat Vladislav Tretiak with 36 seconds left to win Game 8 over the Soviets in the historic 1972 Summit Series.? That memorable moment is not only being relived, but retraced as Canadians are being invited to pay tribute to Canada?s on-ice watershed moment.
40 years after Henderson triggered the goal light behind the Soviet?s net, Canada?s History Magazine is celebrating the historic moment Henderson became a national hero with a renewed ?Henderson in the Hall? internet campaign, a feature spread in its current issue (now on newsstands) and an ?Aislin Print Online Auction?.
During this monumental 40th anniversary, Canadians are being urged to renew the debate and raise the level of the drive to immortalize the Canuck who scored the goal heard around the world.?? Mark Reid, Editor-in-Chief of Canada?s History emphasized, ?Paul Henderson?s winning goal easily ranks as the greatest hockey moment in Canadian history.? Not only that, but Henderson scored the game-winner in the final three games of the series.? The Summit Series transcended hockey.? It united our nation like never before.? Henderson clearly belongs in the Hall.?
Despite scoring the biggest goal that Canadian hockey fans have ever witnessed, Paul Henderson has yet to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.? Henderson played 13 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for Toronto, Detroit and Atlanta.? He also played another 5 seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA), netting a total of 758 points.? While others might argue that?s hardly Hall of Fame territory, Henderson?s last minute goal in Game 8 of the Summit Series immortalized him as a national hero.? Canada?s History says that Henderson has done more than enough to be recognized as one of the country?s most legendary hockey players.
From September 19th until September 28th, hockey fans from coast to coast can show their support in two ways:? Hockey fans can bid on the chance to win an original ?Aislin? ?72 Series print created exclusively for Canada?s History to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Paul Henderson?s historic goal.? This signed, one-of-a-kind print by Canada?s premier editorial cartoonist, Terry ?Aislin? Mosher features Henderson and Yvan Cournoyer at the Summit.? Aislin calls it ?Canada?s own Mount Rushmore.? All proceeds go to support the educational programs of Canada?s History.
