Four years ago, the Omni Bedford Springs Resort, which had been shuttered for nearly two decades, reopened after an extensive, $120 million restoration. The effort returned the 216-room resort in Bedford, Pa., to its 1905 grandeur while updating its springs eternal spa, indoor and outdoor pools, guestrooms and suites and golf course.
The operators apparently are doing something right, as it has debuted at No. 8 among the top 50 resorts in the United States and Canada in Travel + Leisures World?s Best Awards 2011. It received a score of 92.71 out of 100, based on reader polls.
The No. 1 resort was Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tenn., with a score of 94.40.
Despite the millions of dollars The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., has spent updating its facilities and adding a snazzy casino, that resort ranked 30 on the list, with a score of 90.64. But that was a big jump from 2010, when it was No. 51.
The Greenbrier spa and its service quality has received topped rankings in other Travel + Leisure surveys in the past.
Delta Air Lines, one of the nation?s largest air carriers, can?t promise not to lose your bags, but it has launched an online service to let you track the movement of your bags at each stage of their journey from baggage check-in to airport arrival. You can even go online during your flight to see whether your bag made it onto your plane.
Several airlines have online programs to let passengers track the status of lost-luggage claims. But Delta says it is the first U.S. airline to provide an online service to follow the movement of luggage before it is lost.
This is how it works: Baggage handlers attach a tag with a bar code to each piece of luggage. As the luggage is screened, sorted and loaded into planes, workers scan the code at several points in the process. Passengers who go to www.delta.com/baggage/BaggageTrackStatus.action can type in the numbers on their luggage tags and see when and where their bags were last scanned.
