Feng Shui Tips for Your Bathroom to Promote Wealth | Home Design ...

Avoiding Bad Feng Shui in Your Bathroom - According to the ancient art of Feng Shui, bathrooms are known to have bad Feng Shui because this is the area of the house where energy is removed. However, with a few tips, you can get rid of bad bathroom Feng Shui and encourage the flow of energy and promote prosperity.
Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of geomancy that believes that the laws of both Heaven and Earth need to be followed. In doing so, a person can achieve balance and harmony and receive good energy or qi that promotes prosperity and wellness.
Feng Shui is now applied in home and interior design. It is mainly used in bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens and home offices. Bathrooms have earned a bad reputation in Feng Shui because this is the area of the house where energy is drained. Nevertheless, you can still get food Feng Shui for your bathrooms if you plan carefully.

Location

When thinking of the location of your bathroom, keep in mind that this particular room is governed by the water element. According to Feng Shui experts, this element is connected with wealth and prosperity. You also need to consider what is the primary function of the bathroom: the elimination of waste. Knowing these details can help you in planning the right location for your bathroom.

There are several areas that are not ideal locations for your bathroom. Here are some of them:

? Near the front door

The front door is a literal and figurative entryway where wealth and prosperity enter and having a bathroom near it will cause them to leave the house.

? Opposite the kitchen

The kitchen is governed by the fire element and if the bathroom is located at the opposite side of the kitchen, their elements are most likely to clash.

? At the center of the house

According to Feng Shui experts, this is the worst location for your bathroom. The center of your home is supposed to be left open because this is the area where all the energies in your house congregate. It is considered bad Feng Shui to allow these energies go out of the house.

Colors and D?cor

Remembering that the bathroom is governed by the water element is also important when it comes to choosing colors and decorations for your bathroom. The flow of water in the bathroom is usually downwards so you need to balance this out by introducing the wood element. Having colors and d?cor from the wood element will introduce an upward movement in the bathroom. Good colors for bathrooms include pale blue, shades of cream and grayish hues. For the wood element, you can use wooden accessories or add a small picture of trees on the wall.

Clutter and Other Things to Consider

Here are other good Feng Shui tips for your bathroom:

? To promote good Feng Shui, get rid of the clutter in your bathroom or else the energies will stay stuck in the room.

? Keep your bathroom neat and carefully clean it once a week.

? Keep the bathroom door closed and the toilet seat down when it is not used.

? If your bathroom has windows, keep it open.

Nuanced health care decision could disrupt prediction markets

Many people have money riding on the Supreme Court's verdict on the Affordable Care Act, which is expected Thursday, from health care executives to 24-year-olds hoping to stay on their parents' insurance a few more years. But none have a more direct financial interest in the decision than those who have gambled on the outcome on Intrade.com. The price on the site currently rests at a 75 percent chance that the court will overturn the individual mandate provision at the center of the case. When the court issues its decision, those who placed bets will find out if they won or lost?probably.

Situations like this test the strength of the online prediction markets in two ways. First, it can be tricky to define court decisions in a way that's precise enough to make it clear who won, particularly if the court takes a surgical approach to the law. Second, the crowd is less precise when it assesses the judgments of nine secretive people, compared to predicting the outcome of a popular election.

First, there's the difficulty in deciding what to bet on. The Affordable Healthcare Act consists of many different initiatives packed into one large law. At the core is the individual mandate requires that all Americans have healthcare or pay a tax. Several additional provisions stand out. The law requires insurers make insurance available to people with pre-existing conditions, expands Medicaid eligibility, sets up health insurance exchanges, and allows dependents to stay on their family's health insurance through their 26th birthday, to name a few. It would be interesting to see how the wonkiest gamblers predict the fate of any of these provisions. But it would be a nightmare to write a legal contract in a way that would make it clear who won and who lost under the almost infinite possibilities available to the court.

Intrade encountered a similar quandary recently with its book on the control of the Senate. What everyone wants to know is which party will control the Senate after the upcoming election. But there is a non-negligible possibility that this won't be clear even after every election is decided, thanks to the role of independent senators. If, for example, Maine's Angus King is the swing vote in the Senate, how would one clearly define the outcome? What if he waffles on which party he will caucus with or refuses to state his choice officially until January 2? Even if there's a general political consensus, it may not satisfy the language of the contract on which people placed money. In this case, prediction markets have three objective outcomes: Democratic control, Republican control, and neither, even though "neither" is very likely Democratic.

For Obama's healthcare law, the gambling is limit to whether the court overturns the individual mandate. Here, we see a curious phenomenon: The odds have steadily risen since the oral arguments, even though there has been virtually no new information relating to the justices who will make the decision.

The justices' aggressive questioning of the administration's lawyers during the oral arguments caused the odds of an overturn to jump. Since then, public sentiment has been one of the few relevant sources of information. Of course, public opinion should not have an impact on the outcome, but clearly the markets believe that it does. (There's some evidence for this. There was little discussion on the constitutionality of the law until public opinion turned against it.)

Since Monday's decisions on two other major cases, court watchers have attempted to divine the opinion on the healthcare act based on what hasn't yet happened. First, the court upheld part of Arizona's 2010 immigration law, but struck down three major tenants of it with five votes. Second, the Supreme Court struck down Montana's limit on corporate donations, effectively ending meaningful campaign finance on all levels of government. This was a 5-4 decision along the same lines as Citizens United.

Some speculate that, because Chief Justice Roberts did not write either of those major opinions yet, he has saved himself for a big opinion on Affordable Health Care?suggesting he is part of the conservative majority. The markets are unconvinced, having wavered after the Montana ruling, but returned to their exact starting point after the Arizona ruling. Within 48 hours, we'll know whether that was wise.

Louis C.K. turns to Internet to sell tickets directly to fans

16 hrs.

Comedian Louis C.K. struck gold last year by taking the risky path alone to fund and distribute a?stand-up comedy show online, bypassing all the usual traditional business routes. If it failed for any reason, he'd be hundreds of thousands in the hole, but it caught on in a massive way, far more than he expected. Now he's hoping the Internet will do the same thing when it comes to tickets?for his live shows.

In an email sent to those on?his mailing list, he explained that he is tired of all the fees and scalping that plague online ticket sales. Pricing his tickets lower just meant scalpers bought up more, and meanwhile ticket sellers were tacking on huge markups. So he figured if he can produce a comedy show with his own team, why not organize a tour?

He explains in a long and characteristically profane email that is clearly unedited, if only because of the number of typos:

My goal here is that people coming to see my shows are?able to pay a fair price and that they be paying just for a?ticket. ?Not also paying an exhorbanant fee for the privalege of?buying a ticket.

Tickets across the board, everywhere, are 45 dollars. ?That's?what you'll actually pay. ?In every case, that will be less than?anyone has actually paid to see me (after ticket charges) in?about two years and in most cases it's about half of what you?paid last year.

The benefits are that people can see him for cheaper, scalpers can be dealt with more efficiently, and he doesn't get angry emails from people.

One thing it doesn't get him is more money: he pays the sales tax on your ticket, so it costs $45 regardless of where you live, and he had to book at some new venues that might not be as big or established as the old ones. But he says he's more interested in reaching more people now, and "Either way, I still make a whole lot more than my?grandfather?who taught math and raised chickens in Michigan."

Tour dates and links to buy can be found at Louis C.K.'s site. The rest of the email really is not suitable for reprint here, but fans of the comedian may enjoy it, so you can read it?here?if you like.

PHOENIX (AP) ? The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has stripped at least five Arizona police agencies of their special powers to make federal immigration arrests.

The decision came Monday as the U.S. Supreme Court struck down key parts of Arizona's immigration law but upheld a requirement that officers, while enforcing other laws, question people's immigration status if they're believed to be in the country illegally.

Agreements that gave local police the power to make federal immigration arrests were rescinded for the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Mesa and Phoenix police departments and the Yavapai and Pima county sheriff's offices.

It was unclear whether two other Arizona police agencies with similar agreements had their federal powers stripped away.

The federal government says the agreements are no longer productive.

Fit Of Passion Lets You Buy Jeans Online? That Fit

Screen shot 2012-06-24 at 11.54.47 AMBack at the Startup Alley at TechCrunch Disrupt New York this year, we discovered an awesome Israel-based startup called Brayola, which uses bras that ladies already own to help them find perfect-fitting bras online. But it would appear that a similar idea has been executed in a much more gender-blind and mainstream form. Fit Of Passion, a company we met at the Philly TechCrunch Mini Meetup, uses information you put in about jeans you already own to help you find and buy jeans online that actually fit.

In suburban America, middle class confronts poverty

By Izhar Harpaz
Dateline NBC?

BOULDER, Colo. ??The small communities that dot the picturesque mountain landscape outside Boulder, Colo., conjure up an image from long before the great recession. Here the manicured lawns and expensive cars are a testament to the achievements of a fiercely independent and educated middle class; a 21st century version of suburban bliss. But often these days, the closed doors of well-kept houses hide a decidedly different reality: hushed conversation about food stamps and Medicaid, depleted bank accounts and 401K?s, kitchen shelves stocked with groceries from food pantries.

Credit: Amelia Holoway Krales

"It's this dirty little secret,? said Joyce Welch, a stay-at-home mother of three whose husband, a mechanical engineer, lost his job six months ago. ?Everybody is supposed to be able to buy the new car, supposed to buy the new house. And what we don't talk about is people who struggle, and they're struggling more and more."? The Welch family lives in Superior, a Boulder suburb that was listed by Money Magazine as one of the ?Top 20 best places to live in America? in 2011. Neighboring Louisville was ranked number one.

The evidence that times are rough for many suburban middle class families is not merely anecdotal.? For Dateline NBC?s upcoming special ?America Now: Lost in Suburbia,? airing Sunday, June 24th at 8pm/7c, Boulder County's Department of Housing and Human Services provided the number of Louisville and Superior residents that relied on public safety nets to make ends meet.? And while these affluent communities still boast some of the lowest poverty levels in Colorado, the statistics were nonetheless startling: since 2008 the combined number of families on Medicaid more than doubled, as did the number of people utilizing food assistance. ?Lafayette, another well-to-do suburb in East Boulder County experienced similar increases.?

And it isn?t just happening in Boulder County.? A 2011 study by the Brookings Institute revealed that for the first time in United States history there were more poor people living in the suburbs than in cities. The research, based on the most recent United States Census data, showed that a record 15.4 million suburban residents lived below the poverty line last year, up 11.5% from the year before, and? that ?by 2010, suburbs were home to one-third of the nation?s poor population?outranking cities (27.5 percent), small metro areas (20.5 percent), and non-metropolitan communities (18.7 percent)." ?

The Brookings Institute study?examined the percentage change of suburban poor populations between 2000 and 2010 in the 95 largest metro areas in the US. ?It found that in 16 of them the suburban poor population more than doubled during that time. The Denver metro area which includes some Boulder suburbs saw an increase of 96.4%. And while many of the suburban poor are newly arrived immigrants or transplants from the inner cities, a significant number are formerly middle class families who have fallen victim to the most recent recession. ? ?

The need for help may transcend any published statistics. Sarah Nelson, the program director at the Sister Carmen Community Center, a non-profit organization in Lafayette, Colorado, that provides financial assistance to low-income families in East Boulder County, said that Sister Carmen?s share of clients from Louisville and Superior rose from four percent in 2010 to a whopping twenty-two percent by the end of 2011. Many of these formerly middle-class families, Nelson said, have struggled under the radar and have not accessed public assistance programs: ?"Their resources are drained.? They've utilized all of their savings, all of their retirement funds.? Their unemployment's run out.? They've gotten as much help from family and friends as they possibly can.? And we're their last resort.?

Joyce Welch?s financial stress was exacerbated by the medical bills for one of her children, who suffers from a debilitating chromosomal disorder; the out-of-pocket costs of almost $30,000 a year had left the family with no savings. ?So she saw no choice but to turn to Sister Carmen for assistance. ?It was, she said, one of the most difficult things she has had to do in her life. ?To have to actually vocalize, ?I can't do the basics.? I have to have help.?? That is something that is just hard? I want to be able to do it on my own. I want to be the one to help others, not the one who has to ask for help.? ?But with her husband?s unemployment check as the family?s only source of income, Joyce has joined the at least three and half million suburbanites who have fallen below the U.S. poverty line since 2007. She did what she felt she had to do for her three children; sign up for Medicaid and Food Stamps. Sister Carmen offered to supplement her food shopping with monthly visits to their food pantry, so that Joyce could shift some money she would have otherwise spent on food to other important bills. Reluctantly, Joyce agreed.?

Boulder County?s Department of Housing and Human Services?has tried to reach out to struggling formerly middle class families like the Welches before they hit rock bottom. "Safety nets are historically built to try to catch people right before they hit the pavement,? said HHS director Frank Alexander, "if we can get people before they fall we can serve a lot more people in a lot better way and we don't have to just clean up the mess on the street."

According to Alexander, helping a family in need with their mortgage or rent payments may cost the county in excess of $10,000 in temporary ?front end? assistance, but if that money prevents homelessness and all its associated economic and social ills it can save the county much more than that. "We know that if a senior who's trying to live independently in the community ends up in a nursing home, that that shifts cost to $75-85,000 a year. We know that if a family's in a home and they get foreclosed upon, it costs us almost $80,000 as a community with that home being foreclosed upon.? And the interventions that we can do as a human service system with our community partners are much less costly.? The time duration is much more limited.? And the outcomes for the families and individuals are much better.?

Boulder County has signed up non-profit organizations like the Sister Carmen Community Center to be conduits for some of its front-end services. With the center?s help Joyce Welch and her family qualified for county rent assistance until August 2012, enough time, Joyce hoped, for her husband to find a job that will get the family back on their financial feet. ?But for now, she has begrudgingly accepted that she has become a new and different statistic of poverty in America.

?People like me are on food stamps. It?s people who want to go to work and can?t find work and don?t have an alternative,? she said, drawing an invisible square around her face, ?I am the face of food stamps in 2012.? I'm the face of Medicaid in 2012. I don?t like it, you know, I don't sit there and wanna scream it from the mountaintop.? But this is reality.? This is my reality.? This is the reality for more and more people in America."

A review of the warning signs of colon cancer ? Real Bizzy

Colon cancer begins within the large intestinal tract, and that is the colon. This cancer might in addition occur in the rectum at the end of the colon, and it will be known as rectal cancer. The two cancers may be referred to as colorectal cancer. Colon cancers generally begin as noncancerous polyps that grow into cancer. Many people with colon cancer do not have signs and symptoms or develop them in the later stages in the illness. Appropriate tests could be in a position to discover symptoms of colon cancer prior to symptoms develop. This consists of fecal occult blood tests as well as a colonoscopy.

Successful restaurants follow Hooters' formula

The waitresses at Twin Peaks wear skimpy plaid tops that accentuate their chests. In case you didn't catch the joke, the chain's logo is an image of two pointy, snow-capped mountains. And the sports bar doesn't stop there: It promises "scenic views."

Twin Peaks owner Randy DeWitt downplays all of that and insists that the appeal of the restaurant goes beyond the obvious. Hearty meals and a focus on making customers feel special, he says, are what really keeps them coming back.

"We believe in feeding the ego before feeding the stomach," he says. Or as the website of the mountain lodge-themed restaurant states, "Twin Peaks is about you, 'cause you're the man!"

Twin Peaks is part of a booming niche in the beleaguered restaurant industry known as "breastaurants," or sports bars that feature scantily clad waitresses. These small chains operate in the tradition of Hooters, which pioneered the concept in the 1980s but has struggled in recent years to stay fresh.

Instead of relying on lust alone, the new crop of restaurants is growing by offering new themes (think: rustic lodges and Celtic pubs) and varied menus (think: pot roast and shepherd's pie instead of just burgers and wings). In other words, they're hoping maybe people really are coming in for the food.

The nation's top three "breastaurant" chains behind Hooters each had sales growth of 30 percent or more last year, according to Technomic, a food industry research firm. They still represent less than 1 percent of the nation's top restaurants, but the upstart chains are benefitting as other mid-priced options like Applebee's and Bennigan's have experienced declines during the economic downturn.

"The younger crowds want to go to a newer place, not where mom and dad took them," says Darren Tristano, an analyst at Technomic.

Tovan Adams says he frequents Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery in Tempe, Ariz., where waitresses wear matching tartan mini-skirts and bras that fit in with the restaurant's Celtic theme. He even brings his daughters, ages 6 and 9, with him for lunch.

"If you come in the evening, you'll see a lot of kids here," says Adams, an electric engineer who likes the menu's variety. "Everyone's still got their clothes on. If you go to the beach, it's a lot worse than being here."

Lynette Marmolejo, a college admissions worker, dropped in at the Tilted Kilt for the first time recently. She likes that the restaurant is dominated by the "corporate crowd" rather than the "college crowd." And she says the half-dressed waitresses don't bother her.

"Prices and the food ? if those are good, I don't care what anybody's wearing," Marmolejo says.

Tilted Kilt, which serves dishes such as shepherd's pie and "Irish nachos" (potato chips instead of corn tortillas), had annual sales of $124 million last year, reflecting growth of 33 percent. And by the end of this year, the company expects to have 95 locations, up from 57 at the end of last year.

That growth is one reason Tilted Kilt CEO Rod Lynch, bristles at the "breastaurant" moniker. He says the word implies that the company's success is based purely on sex appeal. To the contrary, he says his customers ? about three-quarters of whom are men and of the average age of 36 ? consistently say the experience is about far more.

Tilted Kilt doesn't go so far to call itself a family restaurant. But Lynch understands the risks of crossing a certain line.

"We want to be very PG-13," he says. Its "class in all things" motto also means servers can't have tattoos, piercings or dyed hair.

Rose Dimov, a 22-year-old waitress at Tilted Kilt, says her job is no different from any other waitressing gig; make guests feel special and ensure they have a good time. As an aspiring ballroom dancer, she also says she's not fazed by the revealing outfit that comes with the job.

"Going to a restaurant should be an experience," Dimov says. "We're entertainers."

Although the name might suggest otherwise, the owner of Mugs N Jugs in Clearwater, Fla., says his place also is like any ordinary restaurant with entertainment. Sam Ahmad says his game room, pool table and karaoke are why 40 percent of his customers are families.

Sales at the restaurant grew to $3 million in 2008, from $700,000 in 1998, Ahmad says, but have since declined because of the recession. After selling a second location to a franchisee last year, Ahmad is looking to find others who want to open franchise locations under the Mugs N Jugs banner.

As for the tank tops and shorts the waitresses wear, Ahmad says they don't reveal too much. And those photos on the Mugs N Jugs website showing waitresses leaning over a pool table? Ahmad explains they are purely for marketing purposes.

"They're at an angle because they're at a pool table," he says. "When you're in the restaurant, you won't see that. She'll be standing."

Taking a cue from its much smaller rivals, Hooters is also making changes.

The company opened its first location in 1983 in Clearwater, Fla., with waitresses sporting the now famous tiny orange shorts and tight white tank tops. The chain grew rapidly at first but has struggled in recent years. Sales have fallen steadily since peaking in 2007 at $960 million, as the menu and decor grew stale.

Last year, a group of private investors bought the chain of 365 restaurants and decided to try to revive the business. In February, Hooters opened a renovated location in Atlanta to showcase its new look with upgraded TVs, an outdoor bar and a covered patio. Remodeling is slated for another six to eight restaurants this year.

In April, Hooters also beefed up its menu with items that include a Baja burger, buffalo chicken sliders and a spinach and shrimp salad. The idea is to offer dishes that draw new customers, says David Henninger, Hooters' chief marketing officer. Currently, more than three quarters of Hooters customers are male, with an average age of 45.

As part of the effort to improve its image, Henninger says Hooters is looking to showcase the life stories of its servers, many of whom are studying to go on to professional careers.

"The public can be misinformed about what we do," says Henninger, who was hired this year. "They jump to their own conclusions."

Without explaining how, he says the "curious" name of the restaurant could easily be misinterpreted. He says that the name is "part of the fun" and is about being "in on the joke."

No matter how hard they try to open their doors to a broader audience, Hooters and its rivals remain the subject of criticism. "If it's an adult entertainment business, that's fine," says Mona Lisa Wallace, president of the San Francisco chapter of the National Organization for Women. "Where they're crossing the line is when they expose young children to the objectification of women."

Not every chain is defensive about the reputation of breastaurants.

At Twin Peaks, based in Addison, Texas, sales last year grew 35 percent to $44 million from the previous year, according to Technomic. Owner DeWitt touts the 22-restaurant chain's amenities but is under no illusions about the main attraction.

Waitresses, for instance, vary their costumes for special occasions. Around the holidays, servers dress up like Santa's little helpers. Around Easter, they dress up like bunnies.

"We hire only spectacular talent," says DeWitt. "They have to fit into that costume."

Super-social spaceman shares his story

NASA via Twitpic

NASA astronaut Ron Garan looks into the camera from outside the International Space Station in July 2011. "Knocking on the door to come back in #FromSpace after yesterday's spacewalk," Garan wrote on Twitpic.

By Alan Boyle

You might think it's cool enough that NASA astronaut Ron Garan has spent months aboard the International Space Station, but he?s become even better-known as a social-media maven. This month he passed the 2 million mark for Google+ circles, putting him at No. 21 on the Google+ Top 100. His Fragile Oasis postings are a highlight on the Web, Facebook and Twitter. His "Ask Me Anything" exchange with Reddit users went so well he's thinking of doing it again.

So what's the secret to his success? It's really not a secret at all: He?s got a good story to share, about the beauty and fragility of planet Earth.

The 50-year-old New York native is a former Air Force fighter pilot who has degrees in business economics and aerospace engineering. He joined the astronaut corps in 2000, and his training for spaceflight included a turn as an "aquanaut" for NASA's NEEMO underwater research mission in 2006. Garan has been up in space twice ? in 2008, on the shuttle Discovery to help deliver Japan's Kibo lab to the International Space Station; and just last year for a nearly six-month tour of duty on the station.

Garan says another stint on the space station is "always a possibility, down the road." But right now, he's focusing on NASA's Open Government Initiative, which aims to build stronger collaborative ties between government, industry and the general public. That means social engagement isn't just something he does in his spare time. It's part of his job.

During a recent interview, Garan talked about how he became a super-social spaceman, and what he's learned from the adventure. Here are some edited excerpts of the Q&A:

Cosmic Log: When you come into contact with the public, what do you find they?re most curious about?

Garan:?"Well, what they?re most curious about is the basic question of what life is like, living in space. It really is a marvelous experience. It?s very interesting in a lot of respects ? and probably the greatest part about it is that it gave me an incredible sense of appreciation for what we have here on our planet. Everything from just simple things that define the beauty of life on our planet ? the breeze in your face, and the smell of flowers, watching a flock of birds and a million other things. After you?re up there for a while, those are things that?you really start to miss.

"I had the opportunity to have a short-duration flight on the space shuttle Discovery back in 2008, during which I was up there for two weeks, and then a long-term one where I was up for five and a half months. And it?s a very different experience. You have the same views, you have the same environment that you live in. But being able to see the earth, day in and day out, and watch the earth change ... and to really start to miss some of the things that I took for granted, that really gives you that appreciation."

Ron Garan / NASA

A fish-eye view of the International Space Station, captured by Ron Garan last July, features the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer in the foreground. A Russian Progress cargo ship and a Soyuz crew capsule are docked on the left end of the station. The structure extending to the left of the AMS is a thermal radiator. One of the station's gold-colored solar arrays is visible in the background. And off to the right, the shuttle Atlantis is docked to the station's Tranquility module.

Q: So how did the Fragile Oasis website enter into the mix?

A:?"That came out of my shuttle mission in 2008. I had a little bit of frustration. I imagine it?s like when you go to the Grand Canyon, and you?re there by yourself, and you sit there at the rim of the Grand Canyon and you?re looking out over this amazing thing. And imagine that very, very few people have been able to have that experience. For me, at least, that would be frustrating, and the experience would not be as rich as it would be if I had the opportunity to share that with people. So I was frustrated during my shuttle mission that I couldn?t share the experience.

"When I got assigned to my long-duration mission, there?s two and a half years of training, and during that two and a half years, I really brainstormed how I could do that. We came up with Fragile Oasis, not just to have it as a website where we could tell stories about space, but the goal was always to provide a platform for people to follow along on the mission, not as spectators but as fellow crew members. To have an interactive way to do it.

"We had some significant technical challenges in getting that thing off the ground, and it?s still a work in progress. It doesn?t have a lot of the interactive features that we wanted it to have, but we?re working on it. When I launched to the International Space Station, and I had the five and a half months up there, I really was very thankful that I had this tool, this platform, to be able to communicate. And in the meantime, we had the exponential increase in the popularity of social media tools.

"First I did Facebook, but I didn't see that as a public outreach tool. I saw that as a way to connect with old friends, and I was just using it on a personal basis. On the other hand, I started Twitter for one reason: I saw it as a way to do education outreach. I could say, I?m learning about this experiment we?re going to be doing in space, and I?d put a link on there to the experiment's website and the science behind it. I saw that as a very powerful way to do outreach. I now see the benefits of outreach in other platforms as well, including Facebook and obviously Google+. In the case of Google+, I see a very robust mechanism to share the space program and the experience of living in space with a lot of interactive features on that platform."

Q: With all your experience in social media, do you find that you favor one tool over the other? From your comments, it sounds as if you?re seeing some differentiation in how those different tools can be used. Particularly with Google+, you just recently passed the 2-million-follower mark. That must be one of the big successes for your efforts.

A:?"Well, I think all the platforms offer slightly different tools to tell the story. I think they all fit together really well, actually. So it?s not a 'one-platform' type of message. We want to reach the broadest audience we can, because the excitement of spaceflight is global. It?s for all humanity. So the more tools we can use to tell that story, and the more people we can get involved with the story, the better off the whole message will be."

Q: Did you have to do a selling job with NASA to do the sorts of things you?re doing?

A:?"It took a while to catch on, but it?s catching on now across the board. We realize the benefit of social media. I?m on some social-media committees now, on some working groups to help not only crew members and astronauts, but also thousands of other people who work in the space program. They have a very compelling story as well. We?re trying to find the best way to get that story out. And what we?re finding is that just letting people tell their story in the way they want to tell it is the best way to do it.

"Obviously, there have to be guidelines. But the more leeway we can give people in the space program to tell their story, the richer the experience will be, both for the people who are reading it and for the people who are doing it. That?s one of the cardinal rules here, to give people as much leeway as we possibly can."

Q: Are there any guidelines or favorites that you want to pass along to people who want to be closer in touch with the space adventure?

A:?"Oh, yeah. There are tons and tons of people. Most of the astronauts who fly in space right now have Twitter accounts. They?re all on there. There?s also @NASA_Astronauts, where we try to retweet, as best we can, everything from all the astronauts. There?s @NASA, the official Twitter account. There?s the Facebook version, and soon the Google+ version of all these as well. There?s commercial spaceflight: @SpaceX has a social media presence. There are people outside the space agency who are involved in telling the story as well, such as @YurisNight and #spacetweeps.

"What we?re finding through this is that it?s not just the official word from NASA, the European Space Agency and the Japanese space agency. There are citizen scientists and all these other groups that have formed around the idea of space exploration, and they really do a great job of telling the story as well. It?s obvious that there?s a lot of passion and heart and soul that?s put into this."

Q: Is there something about the space story that particularly resonates with social media?

A:?"I think it?s because it?s a human endeavor, and throughout the 50 years of human spaceflight, it?s always been a select few people who have gotten to fly in space, and we?ve relied on them to come back and tell us what it was like. Now, through technology and through these new platforms, we can bring people along with us on the missions and have them experience this is real time. You can see example after example of this.

"An easy example is, if one of us sends out a tweet with a picture, let?s say, and we misidentify the geographic location, we?re going to find out about that pretty fast. That happened to me on my mission, and I thanked the person who brought that to my attention. I started sending pictures to that person first, to make sure I got it right. We don?t have a lot of time up there, and all the pictures and all the social media that we do is in our free time. So to have people on the ground, crowdsourcing or open-sourcing or however you want to put it, that really empowers us to do more. It makes communication much more effective."

Q: Have you ever thought if it would be possible to boil down the glory of space down into one tweet? Is there any elevator talk you?ve thought about giving in 140 characters, about what it?s like to fly in space?

A:?"You?d need at least 147 characters to do that ... no. I know I couldn?t do it. That would be a pretty remarkable feat."

Q: What?s the one thing that you?d like people to know about spaceflight.

A:?"In 140 characters?"

Q: Not 140 characters, but what?s the one biggest message that you think the space experience provides for people on Earth?

A:?"Well,? to go back to the reason we started Fragile Oasis: The really compelling reason is that we wanted to use this perspective we have on the planet to inspire people to go out and make a difference, and make the world a better planet. The one gift that I think we get when we fly in space is this perspective.

"You don't necessarily have to be in space to get this perspective, but being in space really reinforces it: You see how fragile the planet is. You see how beautiful it is, how peaceful it looks. Then you realize that life is not as beautiful for everybody on the planet as it looks from space. That's a very compelling thing to experience, and hopefully it serves as a call to action, to not accept the status quo and make life on the planet as beautiful as it looks. That's the No. 1 thing that I want to get across."

NASA

The International Space Station looks like little more than a speck with solar panels in this picture, which was taken from the shuttle Atlantis during its approach on July 10. A first-quarter moon shines on the right side of the frame.

Where in the Cosmos
Garan and his colleagues at Fragile Oasis offer a cornucopia of outer-space imagery and blog postings, including this picture of the International Space Station and the moon, as seen from the shuttle Atlantis during its approach for docking last July. The photo served as today's quiz picture in the "Where in the Cosmos" contest, presented weekly on the Cosmic Log Facebook page.

Len Whitney's comment was my favorite: "I believe it's a TIE fighter ... but those are short-range fighters, we're too far out in space ... Must have taken off from that moon ... Wait a second ... that's no moon!!!! It's a space station!"

For figuring out so quickly that the picture showed a moon and a space station, I'm sending 3-D glasses to Facebook followers Matt Jaworski and Lawrence Johnson. I'm also reserving a pair for Whitney. To make sure you're in on next week's contest, click the "like" button on the Cosmic Log Facebook page and join the alliance. It's not a trap!

Crisis Investing in Argentina

by Carl Delfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst
Thursday, June 21, 2012: Issue #1800

You probably agree that nothing gets the blood pumping like making a lot of money in a relatively short time. But to do this you need to think differently than the herd and see a crisis as an opportunity.

While you?ll find the best values in the midst of, or following, a crisis, you need to approach the crisis in the right way.

Let me share with you my three crisis investing rules as applied to Argentina.

  • Avoid the temptation to invest in the vortex of the crisis; wait for the dust to settle and the story to fade from the front page.
  • Identify and monitor a target company (or group of companies) and confirm value and prospects going forward.
  • Put in place a sell stop just in case you?re wrong.

Argentine Gambit #1

This brings me to Argentina, where pessimism is in the water and a crisis is usually just around the corner.

In late May of 2010, I noticed that an avalanche of bad news had beaten down the Argentine market and that the market was getting zero attention from financial media and gurus.

So I put together and recommended to members a diversified basket of seven Argentine stocks trading on the NYSE. You might call this a custom Argentine ETF.

This strategy was based on a belief that that most of the downside risk had been wrung out of the market and that the probabilities of a rebound were in my favor.

The results were well beyond my expectations.

By October 2010, this basket had rocketed almost 70% and then fell through my 15% sell stop for a neat 55% gain in less than five months.

Crisis Investing in Argentina

You can also see that since late 2010, this market has been through a disappointing and choppy decline. This dismal performance has tracked a sad series of anti-market policy blunders by the Argentine government.

The latest crushing blow to investor confidence was nationalizing Repsol?s equity stake in Argentina?s YPF. This sent my Argentina ETF to a level 25% below where it was in May 2010.

It seems that everyone hit the panic button, selling all of their Argentine stocks.

As Spain?s prime minister put it last month, ?You would have to be crazy to invest in Argentina right now.?

Argentine Gambit #2

Call me crazy, but I see an opportunity.

This story faded from the front pages and nobody is pitching Argentine stocks that have been, drip by drip, driven to bargain-basement prices.

Next, I selected and have been watching my value target, Argentina farming giant Cresud (Nasdaq: CRESY). Cresud is one of the largest farming companies in Latin America.

Cresud (Nasdaq: CRESY)

The company produces agricultural commodities like corn, wheat, soybeans, sunflower, sorghum, milk and beef cattle on about half a million hectares of land. In addition to Argentina, Cresud owns significant farmland in Brazil as well as other South American countries.

Cresud, which has a great balance sheet, is largely an asset play as quality farmland is becoming more and more difficult to find in the world.

The stock is trading at about 20% below book value, but represents an even bigger value since land bought many years ago by the company is carried on the balance sheet at cost rather than current market value. As a bonus, Cresud owns 55% of Argentinean real estate developer IRSA (NYSE:IRS).

Some of you may wish to track CRESY for a while to get more comfortable with the situation. Others may wish to take action, but don?t confuse crisis investing with reckless investing. This is truly an aggressive value pick in the midst of max pessimism.

So always take a small position before rushing in. If it?s truly great bargain, there?s no need to hurry.

Put in place a 15% trailing stop loss in case the market moves against us and to lock in profits if we get it right.

Good Investing,

Carl Delfeld

Video: Decision makers: Courting the Latino vote

>> of course, latinos are one of the key constituencies that could ultimately decide who wins the white house . tonight we begin a series of reports in the most fiercely contested battleground states zeroing in on the decision makers. and the issues that matter to them most. tonight david gregory takes us to virginia and some undecided latino voters. both sides are fighting so hard to win over.

>> hey, what you doing?

>> reporter: mary servent of leesburg, virginia from venezuela originally became an american citizen three and a half years ago. she is still working on her english as she raises two boys and runs a small marketing firm. in this presidential race her vote counts a lot.

>> this is hard.

>> reporter: what is most important to you when you're trying to decide who you're going to vote for?

>> the economy is more important.

>> reporter: she says she has confidence in mitt romney 's business skills, but agrees with some of the attacks against him.

>> he is going to go for the rich people in this country. i don't feel he speaks to me.

>> reporter: president obama , she complains, promised too much. especially on immigration.

>> i love hispanic people . remember this situation.

>> reporter: he is with the president. he argues things are better now and mr. obama needs more time to fix the economy.

>> it's not been as fast as we all wish but at least we are not continuing to lose jobs.

>> reporter: how important are families like this? consider this. four years ago here in virginia hispanics made up 4% of presidential voters and the community has only grown, so an additional 1% or 2% could decide whether or not president obama keeps this all important swing state in his column. nationally the president has a huge 2 - 1 advantage over mr. romney among latino voters. but romney's strategy may not be to win among latinos . he is simply trying to cut into the lead.

>> is the america of 11% hispanic unemployment the america of our dreams? we can do better.

>> reporter: telemundo's reporter says both candidates need to convince latinos they know what is important to them.

>> for latino voters the economy, unemployment, the home crisis, the foreclosure crisis, all these issues that affect all of us in the country, have been disproportionately affecting latinos .

>> reporter: high stakes . for mary servent it will be her very first time vote forgue presideforgue -- voting for president. you are the decider in the fall.

>> it's important. it's power for us.

>> reporter: power but for now a tough choice. david gregory , nbc news, leesburg, virginia .

Personal Development in Religion and Science | James Reilly

Welcome to JamesReilly.co.uk Blog

Religion, science and personal development all share the same goal ? to elevate mankind above his current circumstances. We once used religion to increase our spiritual understanding and science to develop our knowledge of the world. However, many people are now using personal development to do both!

Personal development has, in the past, been a luxury pursuit of the rich, famous or dedicated seeker. However, as we find ourselves firmly planted in the 21st Century personal development is becoming more of a necessity than a luxury.

The term Personal Development has historically been a lose term used to describe the development of yourself in some area or field of expertise. However, in this day and age, it really refers to creating the type of self improvement at a mental, emotional and spiritual level that can create real positive physical changes in character and life experience.

As the fear-mongers and financial elite continually drive home the concept that we are entering the worst recession in a hundred years it is now more than ever that we need to launch ourselves on the personal development trail. It is your responsibility to rise above the controlled collective consciousness of lack and embrace the truth that we are all connected and have access to unlimited supplies of everything!

Quantum physics is continually pushing past the old boundaries imposed by outdated science and showing us the way. This new scientific field is experimenting with, and proving the existence of, the energy field that binds all matter and from which everything, animate and inanimate, takes its form.

How does this discovery connect to personal development?

Well religious, metaphysical and esoteric texts have always told us that we are all connected and that there is only one God who is spiritual in nature. We have been told that we are given dominion over life itself. Jesus told us that we are the temple of the living God. Buddha became conscious of his connection with God. We are told that God is spirit and permeates all things. If you believe that there is only one God and that he permeates everything in existence then you must also believe that everything takes its form from this one God. That means that there can only be one true consciousness in existence ? God!

Personal growth and self improvement begins with the premise that we are all connected within one mass of vibrating energy. Most self Improvement tools begin with this premise and mould their approaches around it. However, we always remain a part of the whole and cannot escape that, no matter how hard we try.

Science is now confirming that all these beliefs are true. Quantum theory postulates that this energy field, or divine matrix, is the starting point of all matter. In fact matter, or material objects, are just small packets of energy, within this one energy field, that group together to form things!

A great deal of research and a varied group of truth-seeking scientists have discovered strong evidence to suggest this matrix is composed of electromagnetic energy. We can ascertain then that everything that exists has electromegnetic properties. It is also being shown that our thoughts are composed of the exact same electromagnetic properties as the very energy field in which we live, move and have our being!

Electromagnetic properties are similar to other forms of magnetism ? magnetic! Therefore, if your thoughts are magnetised to this matrix of energy, which is the fabric of reality as we know it, and physical objects are part of this matrix then you can use your thoughts to attract things! Thoughts become things!

It is the aim of personal development to allow you to use this knowledge to change your life by giving you practical tools for achieving your goals. The reason why it is so hard for most of us to grasp this concept, never mind use it to our advantage, lies in the fact that most of our life experiences and material objects are created and attracted to us by our subconscious thoughts. It is the automatic thoughts you think that are responsible for creating your life! Most of these thoughts are negative in nature.

To truly elevate yourself above the collective consciousness and become the master of your own life you must fully embrace this axiom. It is necessary to find and then eliminate the negative thoughts and beliefs you hold that have held you back from achieving your dreams. Personal development is just a tool to achieve this. Use it to alter your automatic thinking. Then you will be free to consciously think yourself into any life you desire!

Why do pet parrots bite? | Good Things Going Around by Lisa Desatnik

(this is one of my past columns from Hyde Park Living)

Okay enough already. I have seen and heard enough of people telling me about mean, aggressive, grouchy, or dominant birds that bite.

I have heard too many anecdotes for ?curing? or ?fixing? the problem that are all about ?fixing? the bird by being the boss of it. About the only thing all these stories seem to have in common is that the fault always seems to rest on the bird. To that, I will emphatically say ? wrong!

One such answer involved clipping wings so that the bird can?t escape. Ironically, letting my birds grow in all their flight feathers has given them so much more confidence because they CAN escape. It has also made me much more aware of how important it is for me to ensure the reinforcing value of their being somewhere because if I don?t, well, they can easily decide to be somewhere else.

In the wild, although vicious attacks occur when a nest site is involved, rarely does competition or conflict escalate into physical violence. Instead they vocalize and/or use body language (such as flapping their wings, posturing, fluffing feathers) until ultimately one will fly or move away.

Why then do birds bite humans? Well, for one humans who get bit generally aren?t very good listeners when it comes to watching their bird?s body language. They don?t allow their bird to nonagressively warn them to back off. Instead they push the limit and they have their body parts where they shouldn?t be (that?d be too close to a bird?s beak when the bird doesn?t want you there).? They teach their birds that nonaggressive body language just doesn?t work in communicating to aggressive, grouchy or dominant humans.

Remember ? behavior is a function of its environment. It happens because it serves the animal a purpose. If a behavior reoccurs, it is because it is being reinforced. And, every time it reoccurs is practice until perfect.

If your bird is on his cage with his tail flailed out and his pupils dilated and you force your hand in his belly to make him step up, I can predict what will happen. You?ll get nailed, you?ll back off (probably yell a thing or two), and your bird will remain where he wants to be. That one occurrence has taught your bird that the only way to get you to leave him alone is to bite you because dilating his pupils, flailing his tail or standing erect is of no use.? The funny thing about this is that, when you do give your bird the power to choose whether or not to be with you (that is, assuming you are worthy of being with), he will be more likely to choose to be with you.

I can tell you the reason that I talk about Barnaby as a bird who doesn?t have an aggressive bone in his little body is because his entire life he has been with people who have allowed him to speak with his body language. He has never needed to resort to biting to make a human back off and as a result, he chooses to want to be around humans more. No matter what I do I always watch him to ?tell? me he wants me to do what I?m doing (either by his lifting his foot for a step up, running toward me, leaning into me, etc.).

Instead of keeping strangers from him I encourage them to interact with him; however, I always watch his body language to ensure he wants their interaction. If I notice any body language that says ?stop, you?re too close?, I make sure those people back up.

Of course there may be times when I have to tilt the scale in my favor with his favorite food treats ? like when I need him to go to sleep and he wants to stay up and watch tv instead.

Please, stop blaming your bird for just doing what works for him. Instead learn to pay close attention to his body language and what is going on in his environment. Learn to remove the need for your bird to bite in the first place.
