Caitlin Deis, fitness specialist for St. Louis Center, wants people to know about the community ?Fitness for Life? program, which is designed specifically for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

The program provides a ?functional fitness training program? to increase the physical fitness level of local residents with these disabilities, thereby increasing their capacity to perform normal daily activities more safely and independently.

The new program, which began this fall, is part of the ?5 Healthy Towns Project,? which includes Chelsea, Dexter, Grass Lake, Manchester, and Stockbridge.

Deis, a 2001 graduate of Chelsea High School, is the full-time fitness specialist, and manages the program.

St. Louis Center is located at 16195 Old US-12.

?Father Enzo Addari, our administrator, has extended the program to within 20-25 miles of St. Louis Center, and would like to welcome more persons w/IDD to come and participate,? Deis said in a press release.

The next classes will begin in January 2013, and will be offered in six-week increments beginning on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, with Beginner to Intermediate Level training on Monday-Wednesday nights from 6-7 p.m., and Intermediate to Advanced Level training on Tuesday-Thursday nights from 5-6 p.m.

The fees are $10 for pre-screening, which will be applied to the program fee if accepted, and the program fee is $48 per person. Those wishing to enroll in both programs will pay $72 per person, and medical clearance from a physician is required for all participants.

For more information about this program, contact Deis, at wellness@stlouiscenter.org, or call 475-8430 or visit the center?s website.
