California bill would outlaw hunting of bears, bobcats with dogs

YOLO COUNTY ? Josh Brones trailed his three hounds as they scampered through the heavy brush of a gully, sniffing for the scent of a bobcat. The dogs have treed many a wild animal in these remote hunting grounds north of Sacramento.

Like generations of houndsmen before him, Brones raised Sequoia, Tanner and Dollar from pups and trained them to track a scent for miles. He ran with them dozens of times as they set off, barking, on the heels of a black bear, bobcat or wild hog.

But now that way of life is threatened in California, Brones lamented as he shifted his backpack and called the dogs back to his side.

Animal rights groups say using dogs fitted with electronic tracking devices to hunt bears and bobcats is cruel and unfair and should be outlawed in California. Hunting bears with hounds is banned in 14 states, including Arkansas, Colorado, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon and Wyoming.

"It's typically a high-tech hunt that results in an animal being shot out of a tree, which is unsporting and the equivalent of shooting an animal in a cage at the zoo," said Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States.

A bill that would ban the hound hunting has been approved by the state Senate and is headed with momentum toward the Assembly floor. Along the way it has illuminated a deep cultural divide in California.

The proposal has riled up hunters who see it as an attack on their lifestyle ? a clash between the values of rural and urban California.

"It's intolerance run amok," said Brones, president of California Houndsmen for Conservation. "It's a reflection of the changing demographics of California as it becomes increasingly urbanized and people have less appreciation for traditional lifestyles such as hunting and fishing, and where our food comes from."

The dispute grew out of another controversy, when Daniel W. Richards, the president of the state Fish and Game Commission, killed a mountain lion in January during a dog-assisted hunt in Idaho. Sporting hunting of cougars has been banned for decades in California but is legal in Idaho.

Backed by hunting groups, Richards rejected calls for his resignation from more than 40 state legislators, including state Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance), who said Richards' killing of the cougar showed poor judgment. Unable to force Richards from office, Lieu introduced SB 1221, the ban on hunting bears and bobcats with dogs.

It's a tradition that goes back centuries. Famous hound-hunters have included George Washington, Daniel Boone and Teddy Roosevelt.

But the appeal to tradition cuts both ways; the state flag prominently features a grizzly bear in homage to an animal hunted out of existence in the wilds of California in 1922.

Today, 5,200 hunters use hounds in California. State officials estimate they took less than half of the nearly 1,600 black bears killed in the state last year and fewer than 20% of the 1,195 bobcats.

State biologists say the population of black bears has increased in recent decades, to about 32,000 now, and the population of bobcats likewise appears to be flourishing.

That, according to dog owner Dan Tichenor, is proof that using hounds is not negatively affecting wildlife management in the state. He and other houndsmen are frequently called when state Fish and Game officials need to catch a rogue bear or university researchers need to track and tag mountain lions, he said.

"Hounds have been used here for over 50 years for research because it is the safest and most humane way of catching the animal," said Tichenor, who along with Brones helps UC Santa Cruz biologists in their mountain lion research.

Brones, who fell in love with the sport after he read "Where the Red Fern Grows" in fifth grade, does most of his hound-aided hunting with a camera rather than a gun. Using dogs allows for catch-and-release, where the hunter lets the animal go once it is cornered and photographed.

He and his hounds have chased about 150 bears up trees in the last 26 years, but only four of them were killed. He has treed about 65 bobcats in that time, and he and a hunting companion killed three ? one to eat and two for a children's museum.

Brones, who is an executive with an education software company, said hunting with dogs gives bears and bobcats more of a sporting chance because the barking of approaching dogs gives them advance warning and a chance to escape. Bears can run for miles and reach speeds up to 30 mph.

Tichenor said last season his dogs ended up chasing bears up trees about half the time they picked up a scent.

Telepathy ? I can read your chat | Netrunner Magazine

Hullo, my first article here, and I?m blithely taking on Telepathy. Officially, Telepathy?is a software framework which can be used to make software for interpersonal communications such as instant messaging, Voice over IP or videoconferencing. Telepathy enables the creation of communications applications using components via the D-Bus inter-process communication mechanism. Through this it aims to simplify development of communications applications and promote code reuse within the free software and open source communities by defining a logical boundary between the applications and underlying network protocols. But that?s geek lingo. For normal people, this is an instant messaging client with additional audio and video features. We checked.

You may or may not have friends, but most of us do use instant messaging and video conferencing to some measure. Often, people use several client programs for different purposes. Like Pidgin and Empathy, Telepathy aims at consolidating all your messaging efforts, i.e. all your messages are belong to us (not a typo), in a single interface. Indeed, Telepathy supports multiple protocols, which we will examine shortly. I set up Telepathy on Kubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin. The installation is a simple affair, provided you know the name of the program, which hides under kde-telepathy. It went smoothly. On first launch, I was asked to configure some accounts.

Configure IM accounts

?

Multiple accounts

The wizard offers several most popular account types from its main interface, including Jabber, Google Talk, Facebook Chat, ICQ, and Windows Live Messenger, but you can expand the view to see the full list, which covers AOL, Bonjour, IRC, Sametime, Yahoo! Messenger, and many others. To get started, I decided to try using Yahoo!, then Facebook, and finally local network discovery, which should be able to detect other users presented on my LAN.

Choose service

Entire list of services

Once you configure your accounts, they will show up in the main interface, which is labeled rather ambiguously as KDE IM Contacts. Both Yahoo! and Facebook accounts worked side by side without any conflicts. In fact, it?s all rather neat. You get several expandable groups of contacts, imported from your user accounts. You also get a bunch of other users present on the Yahoo servers, under the ungrouped category.

Main interface with imported friends lists

?

Diving into the chat world

The experience was quite interesting ? and not at all what I expected. Upon connecting to a Yahoo! account, I was instantly bombarded by invitations to enhance my masculinity and flirt with bots across the Web.

Spam prompts

No matter. On another Linux box, I connected to a second Yahoo! account. I wanted to see whether the two would become visible to one another. After a short while, the second account did pop into view, but it was listed as Offline. Similarly, my own account showed as offline on the other machine. I was able to send chat messages and initiate a highly?schizophrenic?and perhaps somewhat sad self-talk. However, audio and video calls were grayed out. I am not 100% certain if this is the inherent fault of the selected protocol, or if perchance Telephaty is unable to utilize the the full set of features present in the organic IM clients.

Talking to myself

With local network discovery, it was a tad more interesting. The local user showed online with a little green icon near the name. Telepathy did not user the user account profile picture as the avatar. I was able to chat with myself again without any problems. Once more, audio and video call features were disabled. However, user status changes are properly reflected in the chat window on the other side.

User accounts with local network discovery

Local user shows online

Talking to myself again

Change in user status to busy

Then, I discovered a rather disturbing fact. You can send, as well as receive, files to/from local users without any prompt. This means that you can send pictures, useful documents, as well as huge volumes of spam to your local network colleagues without them even being aware that their user directory is being filled with data. There could be perfectly benign reasons for sending files across the network, but you might as well end up with 10GB worth of junk, or potentially malware. No interaction is require to shuffle content back and forth.

File transfer without any prompts

In fact, the only time the file transfer paused was when I tried to copy the same file over twice, and it was only at the far end that the transaction stopped, as the remote user was prompted if they wanted an existing file overwritten. Imagine receiving a thousand files that coincidentally have the exact same names like your own data in the home directory. Imagine the surprise, as well as the hassle of fighting the prompts.

File overwrite warning

?

Conclusion

As a multiple-protocol IM client, Telepathy would benefit from some extra appeal and feature improvements. The interface is bland and uninviting. It looks more like a shopping list than something holding names and pictures of your valued friends, or at least people who help you cope with boredom. Then, it might be entirely my fault, but none of the selected protocols allowed audio or video calls, which could be perfectly fine and by design, but the work flow did leave me wondering. The inability to see the user status with Yahoo! is also on the me-wonders list. Finally, the freedom of sending files to anyone just like that, without any prompts, seems like a big no-no to me, especially since I could not find any way to tweak and configure the Telepathy client, other than the very rudimentary setup of various accounts. All in all, not bad, but hardly the one-stop shop for your instant messaging.

That would be all fellas, enjoy.

Iran and Hezbollah Warn Israel of Turning it into 'Living Hell'

Iran and its long arm, the Lebanese group Hezbollah, have warned their adversary Israel that they will make the country a "living hell".

The immediate provocation for the belligerence are?reports of Israel preparing for a unilateral strike on Iran.

"If we are forced to use them to protect our people and our country, we will not hesitate to do so... and that will turn the lives of hundreds of thousands of Zionists into a living hell," said Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah during a speech.

"I tell the Israelis that you have a number of targets, not a large number ... that can be hit with precision rockets ... which we have," said the secretary general of the Hezbollah. ?

He said any attack on Iran will evoke an enormous response from Tehran.?Nasrallah said a new Middle East without the interference of both the US and Israel is on the cards.

Follow us

"The Zionist regime and the Zionists are a cancerous tumour. The nations of the region will soon finish off the usurper Zionists in the Palestinian land," said the leader addressing a huge gathering.

Only a few days earlier both the Iranian foreign minister and President Mahmud Ahmadinejad threatened Israel saying it would be wiped out if the country carried out an unprovoked attack.

"If they make a mistake, our nation's reaction will lead to the end of the Zionist regime," said a foreign ministry spokesperson who later claimed that Israel does not have enough weapons to confront Iran. The comments were severely criticised by world leaders including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.

Israeli military has been threatening to use its might against the Hezbollah if attacks on Israeli targets continue.?Brigadier General Herzi Halevi, the commander of the Israeli defence forces recently, vowed to wipe out the Hezbollah group in order to stop the attacks from Lebanon. "If we get to another war, Israel will hit Hezbollah decisively, quickly, as fast as we can in order to stop the fire from Lebanon," he said.

Facebook's stock fall 'painful' to watch: Zuckerberg

LONDON: Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly admitted that the firm's stock market tumble has been "painful" to watch, while addressing a meeting to boost the morale of his staff.

He gathered the social networking site's staff to discuss the issue ahead of the release of an extra 271 million shares this week, which cut Facebook shares to just 19.87 dollars, almost half their 38 dollar floatation price.

According to The Telegraph, witnesses said that at the meeting, the 28-year-old chief executive was asked if Facebook employees were allowed to talk about the firm's troubles on Wall Street.

Zuckerberg reportedly replied saying that people should now feel comfortable talking about the issue, but still try not to focus on it.

However, he was forced to acknowledge Facebook's "painful" stock market hammering to employees, whose options were issued at a higher price than the shares are currently trading at. Many remain unable to trade their share as a series of lock-in periods still remain in force, the paper said.

After Facebook shares sank to a new record low, Zuckerberg's personal fortune has also been slashed to about 10 billion dollars, down from estimates of almost 20 billion dollars in May, the paper added.

Red Bull Racing will fight to defend their title this year | bettor.com

Red Bull Racing will fight to defend their title this year

Red Bull Racing have been deemed as the outright favourite for the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship and are presently leading the constructors? championship with 230 points.

The Milton Keynes based team struggled during the last pre-season test this year with the aerodynamics of their car RB8. Moreover, they faced difficulties during the first few races with exploring and understanding the true potential of their car.

It will be important to mention that the defending champions completely dominated during the last two seasons as their driver, Sebastian Vettel stole the show and emerged as the youngest world champion in the history of the sport.

At present, the veteran German driver is standing at third place in the drivers? rankings with 110 points. Additionally, he is ahead of Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus and behind his teammate, Mark Webber who has shown some amazingly performances in the season so far.

The two-time world champion secured an inspiring second podium finish in the first race after taking a start from 6th grid slot. Conversely, he could not score even a single point in the second race as he had a collision with Narain Karthikeyan of HRT. Nonetheless, he made a convincing comeback in the third race in which he came fifth after setting off from 11th grid position.

Furthermore, he claimed a remarkable victory in the Bahrain GP after claiming the pole position. Later, in came 6th in the Spanish GP and secured fourth place finish in the next couple of races. Contrarily, although he secured a tremendous pole position in the European GP, however, he was retired during the end of the race as he had a problem in his car?s alternator.

Nonetheless, he secured third podium finish in the British GP after beginning from the fourth place in the grid. Over and above, he struggled a bit in the German GP as he came 5th after starting from second place in the grid.

On the other hand, Webber is presently at second place in the drivers? rankings with 120 points and is 34 points behind the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari who is leading the standings.

The Australian driver has been one of the most consistent point scorer in the first half of the season as he secured 4th place finish in the first four grands prix. Moreover, he has claimed two race victories and is apparently the second most competent driver in the field of the current season.

It will be important to note that before the race at Hockenheimring, the technical delegate of FIA, Jo Bauer has asserted that Red Bull?s cars are not in accordance with the rules and have asked them to provide the necessary clarifications over the issue.

Nevertheless, the team principal of Red Bull, Christian Horner has said that they are prepared to provide the essential explanations.

?I'm sure there's going to be debate about it,? Horner said. ?Conveniently, there's a Technical Working Group meeting tomorrow and I'm sure this will no doubt go on to the agenda. But the regulations are clear, so there could well be further technical directives that are designed to further clarify those regulations. There's no clause in the regulations that refers to the spirit of the regulations.?

Over and above, he said that they are ready to make the best of the efforts to defend their championship title this year.
