Lebanon should respect laws, borders: Israel (AFP)

JERUSALEM (AFP) ? Israel hopes that Lebanon's new government will respect international law and borders and contribute to regional stability, the Israeli foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

After five months of negotiations, Lebanon announced a new government on Tuesday, with militant group Hezbollah and its allies dominating the line-up.

"Israel hopes that the new Lebanese government will contribute to reinforcing regional stability and respect for the law along its border," the ministry said.

"Israel expects the Lebanese government to apply United Nations Security Council resolutions, in particular resolution 1701, and it calls for the resolution of all outstanding issues through negotiations and with mutual respect," it added.

UN resolution 1701 ended a 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah that killed more than 1,200 Lebanese, mostly civilians, and more than 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers. It did not lead to a permanent ceasefire agreement.

It demanded the disarming of all militant groups in Lebanon, including Hezbollah, and an end to arms smuggling across its borders.

Israel accuses Lebanon of failing to meet its commitments under the resolution and has lodged several complaints with the United Nations.
